About the Role
As Assistant Collection Manager: Care and Access, you will play a hands-on role in caring for and providing access to the British Museum’s collection. Working within the Care and Access team, you will help ensure objects are safely stored, moved, documented and prepared for loans, displays and study across Museum sites. This is a varied, primarily technical role where practical problem solving is central to the day-to-day work. From preparing and installing objects to supporting UK and international loans, you will work with a diverse range of objects and help make the collection safely accessible to colleagues, researchers and audiences.
Key responsibilities include caring for objects in storage, transit and on display, following best practice in handling, storage, security and preservation; preparing, packing and moving objects for loans, displays, study and other Museum activities, including large and heavy objects; creating and installing appropriate mounts and displays for objects at the Museum and other venues; maintaining accurate object documentation including location records, condition reports and condition photography; facilitating access to the collection by supplying objects for study and supervising study rooms; supporting UK and international loans, including acting as a courier when required; and contributing to Integrated Pest Management, training and other collection care projects.
The British Museum is currently undergoing its biggest transformation in nearly 300 years, involving large scale building and gallery changes, new ways of connecting with audiences and evolving ways of working. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to this exciting future while upholding the Museum’s founding vision of accessibility and connection across arts and sciences.
