About the Role
British Transport Police (BTP) is the national police force for the rail network throughout Great Britain, committed to passenger safety and operational excellence. We are seeking a BVLOS Drone Pilot (Police Staff) to join the Drone Development Programme within A-Division. In this role, you will be responsible for the safe flight and management of BTP’s remotely operated drones, operating Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) to provide real-time intelligence, support incident response, save lives, reduce disruption, and respond to incidents across the railway network.

You will undertake a structured programme of training and accreditation aligned with the Drone Development Programme strategy before operating drones daily. Your work will directly support policing objectives and improve response capabilities across the rail network, working closely with operational colleagues and external partners to enhance decision-making and incident resolution.

Key responsibilities include delivering safe and effective BVLOS drone operations, operating Drone in a Box (DIAB) drones, maintaining operational accreditation and competency standards through mandatory training, assessment, and continuous professional development.

Requirements

Experience
- Experience working within safety-critical, regulated, or compliance-driven operational environments.
- Ability to apply defined procedures, governance requirements, and risk controls effectively.
- Proven capability to assess live situations, interpret risk, and make timely, proportionate decisions within regulatory frameworks.
- Strong skills in applying risk assessment processes, following checklists, and operating consistently in safety-critical environments.

About you
- Ability and willingness to successfully complete specialist BVLOS drone training, accreditation, and ongoing competency assessments.
- Ability to maintain focus over extended periods in a fast-paced operational environment, including during high-pressure or time-critical incidents.
- Excellent communication skills to collaborate clearly and effectively with operational colleagues and stakeholders, supporting coordinated responses and decision-making.

Qualifications
