About the Role
The Clerk to HM Judges provides first line support to a Lord or Lady Justice of Appeal or High Court Judge, ensuring the best use of the judge's time to enable focus on delivering justice. Responsibilities include managing the judge’s diary, typing documents such as judgments or orders, and liaising with internal and external stakeholders including legal representatives, members of the public, and other judiciary members. The role involves administrative duties, domestic tasks as required by the judge, and transporting court bundles and judicial materials both in London and on circuit. Circuit work typically occurs around three times per legal year, lasting 2-6 weeks or more, requiring overnight stays during the week. Clerks represent their assigned judge operationally, managing changing priorities independently while maintaining confidentiality, tact, courtesy, and diplomacy. Full training will be provided for this unique and rewarding role within the justice system.
Experience
Previous experience using Microsoft Office applications is required. Accurate typing skills with a minimum speed of 35 words per minute are essential and will be tested during the assessment day. Experience in managing complex diaries and administrative duties is advantageous.
About You
You must have a high standard of spoken and written English, with the ability to understand, assimilate, and summarise information clearly and concisely. You should be organised, adaptable, and able to work on your own initiative, making decisions regarding changing priorities without reference to the judge. Confidentiality, tact, courtesy, and diplomacy are paramount. A full driving licence is desirable but not essential.
Qualifications
No formal qualifications are specified; however, candidates must demonstrate the essential skills and behaviours required for the role, including effective communication, decision-making, and delivering at pace. Candidates will be assessed against these behaviours during the selection process.
