About the Role
The Financial Times (FT) is seeking a proven story-getter to lead reporting on credit markets, covering private credit, leveraged finance, distressed debt, and restructuring in London. This role is one of the most competitive and rewarding in business journalism at the FT. The successful candidate will cultivate a wide network of contacts across banks, private credit funds, law firms, and advisers to deliver exclusive stories that influence markets and set the agenda.
As private capital reshapes company financing, this correspondent will cover the rise of direct lenders and alternative credit providers, emerging loan strains, defaults, workouts, and restructurings. A keen nose for identifying credit risk and the tenacity to report it first are essential.
This beat offers significant growth opportunities, including expanding coverage of leveraged buyouts, high-yield and syndicated loan markets, and the evolving interface between public and private credit. The correspondent will collaborate closely with global teams covering corporate finance, dealmaking, private capital, financial services, and markets.
Regular contributions to the Due Diligence newsletter and participation in initiatives such as conferences are expected.
The FT values original reporting, great writing, and intelligent commentary. Editorial staff do not use AI tools by default for creating reader-facing content. Applicants are expected to submit original work reflecting their own knowledge and skills, with AI used only as a research aid where appropriate.
The FT is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, fostering a supportive workplace where all voices are heard and valued. Reasonable adjustments are available to support candidates throughout the application process.
Experience
Proven track record of scooping exclusive stories in credit markets, with strong contacts across banks, private credit funds, law firms, and advisers. Experience covering leveraged finance, distressed debt, restructuring, and corporate finance is highly desirable.

Qualifications
No specific formal qualifications required, but strong journalistic skills, financial knowledge, and relevant experience are essential. A commitment to the FT’s editorial standards and ethical guidelines is mandatory.
