About the Role
As a Customer Delivery Driver at Sainsbury's, you will be the face of the brand at every doorstep, delivering groceries with a thoughtful, friendly, and helpful service. You will drive a 3.5 tonne refrigerated van to deliver orders on time and in excellent condition. Your responsibilities include completing vehicle checks to ensure the van is roadworthy, clean, and organised, securing customers’ shopping before departure, and following planned routes while driving safely in various traffic, weather, and road conditions. You will move containers weighing up to 15kg and deliver shopping to a variety of properties, which may involve steps, lifts, or longer walks from the van. Excellent communication with customers is essential, including keeping them informed of delays, handling queries, and managing order changes. When not out on deliveries, you may assist with tasks across the store as needed. This role requires energy, warmth, and care to consistently deliver an outstanding doorstep experience, supporting Sainsbury’s commitment to customer satisfaction.
Supporting you at work and beyond
Sainsbury’s offers a wide range of rewards and competitive benefits including a 10% discount card (increasing to 15% on Fridays and Saturdays), holiday entitlement based on hours worked, enhanced family leave, matched pension contributions, life cover, share schemes, retail savings, physical and mental wellbeing support, and financial assistance options such as interest-free season ticket loans and pay advances.
Responsibilities
You will work within our stores, which have been community hubs for over 150 years. Your role is vital in delivering customer orders with care and professionalism, ensuring customers receive everything they shop for online with Sainsbury’s day in, day out.
Important checks before you apply
You must be over 18 years old and have held a full UK/EU driving licence for at least 12 months with no more than 6 points. You will complete an online driving risk assessment as part of your interview and a driving assessment upon joining. Right to Work eligibility in the UK is required. Sainsbury’s has installed in-cab AI cameras to monitor driver behaviour, promoting safe and compliant driving standards to protect all road users.
Experience
No specific prior experience is required, but you should be comfortable driving a larger vehicle safely in various environments including busy residential streets, city centres, and narrow country lanes.
About you
Friendly and welcoming with a genuine enthusiasm for helping customers and pride in delivering an excellent doorstep experience. Comfortable working in a fast-paced, physical, and high-energy environment, including repeatedly moving shopping containers weighing up to 15kg. Able to use initiative, solve problems, and make safe decisions while on the road. Enjoys working independently and as part of a wider store team. Flexible and willing to work across the store and take on new challenges. Open to learning, developing, and using route and delivery technology confidently.
Qualifications
You must hold a full UK/EU driving licence for at least 12 months with no more than 6 points. Right to Work eligibility in the UK is essential. No other formal qualifications are required, but a commitment to safe driving and excellent customer service is vital.
