About the Role
The post holder will teach courses within the SEND department, both onsite and at times in community settings. They will ensure high-quality delivery through the implementation of Quality Assurance processes and contribute to the College’s growth by supporting a vibrant curriculum and improving learner outcomes. The role also involves assisting with focused curriculum development, personalised employment support, and learner progression.

The post holder will help meet the College’s strategic goals, especially targeting priority groups under the Adult Skills Fund, and will collaborate with the Head of Curriculum & Quality to deliver a high-quality program aligned with learner and employer needs.

The allocation of hours is outlined in the job advert and may be subject to change if business needs change. The post holder will undertake a teaching commitment for the work offered and ensure availability to provide learners with a continuous learning experience and minimal disruption to their programme.

Key responsibilities include planning, preparing, delivering and evaluating all courses, ensuring alignment with exams, internal syllabi and college processes. Sessions should be stimulating, engaging, relevant and aligned to the current Scheme of Learning and course specifications.

The post holder will set high expectations for learners from the start, embedding college and course expectations, British Values and life skills to equip learners for success. They will manage the learning process effectively by guiding and supporting learners, differentiating teaching to meet individual needs and ensuring appropriate challenge and support throughout the learning journey.

All relevant teaching, learning and assessment materials must be uploaded and maintained on the virtual learning environment, aligned to unit delivery and available from the start of the programme. Learner, group and progress tracking documents must be updated weekly and monthly, including accurate attendance and punctuality records.

Teaching and learning objectives should be challenging and relevant to the course intent, taking into account learner needs and development. Individual learning plans will be agreed with learners, including setting and monitoring SMART targets and providing meaningful feedback.

The post holder will systematically assess learners’ work, providing timely and developmental feedback, and involve learners in reflecting on and improving their performance. They will provide subject specialist advice and support, including progression guidance and referrals to careers teams.

Additional support needs will be identified and planned in liaison with the learning support team. The post holder will work with exams, curriculum support and other teams to ensure accurate learner records, exam registrations and schedules.

Opportunities for learners to experience out-of-classroom contexts such as placements, volunteering, visits to libraries, museums and employment settings will be planned in collaboration with other staff.

The post holder will support the development of exciting programmes to enable learners to gain new skills, qualifications and knowledge aligned to their goals and employment aspirations.

They will assist the college marketing team by participating in key events, promoting courses to new learners and employers, and writing detailed course outlines to support department and college promotion.

Interviews and initial/diagnostic assessments for new and existing learners will be conducted. Attendance and contribution to departmental, college and external meetings as required by the Head of Curriculum & Quality and SLT is expected. Meeting attendance is paid in addition to the hourly rate at the set meeting rate.

The post holder will keep up to date with internal and external assessments and examinations, maintain appropriate records and liaise with the Exams team to support smooth operation.

They will undertake and maintain training in Health & Safety, Equality & Diversity, Safeguarding, Prevent and Data Protection/GDPR, maintaining awareness of key risk issues and escalating concerns as necessary.

Compliance with Professional Standards for Teachers and Trainers in Education and Training as per college policy is required.

Other duties commensurate with the grade include supporting college priorities and management, taking responsibility for Health & Safety within their work area, and proactively managing their own professional development in consultation with their Line Manager.

The post holder must carry out all duties in accordance with College policies including Equal Opportunities, Safeguarding and Data Protection, and work flexibly and efficiently as part of a team to achieve department and college strategic targets.

Additional comparable duties may be reasonably required by the Line Manager or delegated deputy to support the improvement, growth and sustainability of the College.

Requirements

Experience
- Experience of teaching in Adult Education or Further Education post-16 college or training environment
- Experience of teaching a range of levels up to GCSE English/Maths, including preparation for GCSE and functional skills
- Experience of quality improvement processes which support and develop practice

Qualifications
- An appropriate teaching qualification for the Post 16 Sector (e.g. DET / Cert. Ed. or equivalent) and/or willingness to complete a Level 4 qualification within the first year of appointment
- A qualification in the subject specialism to at least Level 4 (e.g. HND, 1st Degree) or in-depth knowledge with a minimum of 3 years’ substantial experience in teaching English/Maths
- Level 2 (GCSE or equivalent) qualifications in English and Mathematics
- A1 Assessors qualification or equivalent
- V1 Verifiers qualification or equivalent
