About the Role
The post holder will teach courses within the SEND department, both onsite and occasionally in community settings. They will ensure high-quality delivery through the implementation of Quality Assurance processes and contribute to the College’s growth by supporting a vibrant curriculum and improving learner outcomes. The role also involves assisting with focused curriculum development, personalised employment support, and learner progression.

The post holder will support the College’s strategic goals, particularly targeting priority groups under the Adult Skills Fund, and collaborate with the Head of Curriculum & Quality to deliver a high-quality programme aligned with learner and employer needs.

Hours allocation may be subject to change depending on business needs. The post holder will undertake a teaching commitment for the work offered and ensure availability to provide learners with a continuous learning experience and minimal disruption.

Key responsibilities include planning, preparing, delivering, and evaluating all assigned courses, ensuring alignment with exams, internal syllabi, and college processes. Sessions should be stimulating, engaging, relevant, and aligned with the current Scheme of Learning and course specifications.

The post holder will set high expectations from the start, embedding college and course standards along with British Values and life skills to equip learners for success. They will manage the learning process effectively by guiding and supporting learners, differentiating teaching to meet diverse needs, and ensuring appropriate challenge and support throughout the learning journey.

All teaching, learning, and assessment materials must be uploaded and maintained on the virtual learning environment, aligned to unit delivery and accessible from the start of programmes. Learner, group, and progress tracking documents must be updated weekly and monthly, including accurate attendance and punctuality records.

Teaching and learning objectives should be challenging and relevant to course intent, taking into account learner needs and development. Individual learning plans must be agreed with learners, including setting and monitoring SMART targets and providing meaningful feedback.

Assessment of learners’ work should be systematic, with timely and developmental feedback to support progress. Learners should be involved in reflecting on and improving their own performance.

The post holder will provide subject specialist advice and support, including progression guidance within the College or referral to careers teams. They will identify and plan additional learner support in liaison with the learning support team.

Collaboration with exams, curriculum support, and other teams is essential to ensure accurate learner records, exam registrations, and schedules.

Opportunities for out-of-classroom learning such as placements, volunteering, and visits to libraries, museums, and employment settings should be planned.

Working with the Head of Curriculum & Quality, the post holder will support the development of engaging programmes that enable learners to gain new skills, qualifications, and knowledge aligned with their personal goals and employment aspirations.

Support for the college marketing team by participating in key events and promoting courses to new learners and employers is expected.

Responsibilities also include writing detailed course outlines, conducting interviews and diagnostic assessments for new and existing learners, attending departmental and college meetings, and keeping up to date with internal and external assessments and examinations.

The post holder must undertake mandatory training in Health & Safety, Equality & Diversity, Safeguarding, Prevent, and Data Protection/GDPR, maintaining awareness of key risk issues and escalating concerns appropriately.

Compliance with Professional Standards for Teachers and Trainers in Education and Training is required, alongside other duties commensurate with the grade, including supporting College priorities and management.

The post holder is responsible for Health & Safety within their work area and must take responsibility for their own professional development in consultation with their Line Manager.

All duties must be carried out in accordance with College policies, including Equal Opportunities, Safeguarding, Data Protection, and confidentiality.

The role requires being a proactive and effective team member, working flexibly and efficiently to achieve departmental and College strategic targets.

Additional comparable duties may be assigned by the Line Manager or delegated deputy to support the improvement, growth, and sustainability of the College.

Requirements

Experience
- Experience of teaching in Adult Education or Further Education post-16 college or training environment
- Experience teaching a range of levels up to GCSE English/Maths, including preparation for GCSE and functional skills
- Experience of quality improvement processes that support and develop practice

Qualifications
- Appropriate teaching qualification for the Post-16 Sector (e.g. DET, Cert. Ed. or equivalent) and/or willingness to complete a Level 4 qualification within the first year of appointment
- Qualification in the subject specialism to at least Level 4 (e.g. HND, First Degree) or in-depth knowledge with a minimum of 3 years’ substantial experience teaching English/Maths
- Level 2 (GCSE or equivalent) qualifications in English and Mathematics
- A1 Assessors qualification or equivalent
- V1 Verifiers qualification or equivalent
