Location
Richmond, with a combination of onsite and home working. Applicants should be able to regularly travel to our Kew site for a minimum of 60% of their work time.

Hours
Full Time. Requests for part-time working, flexible working, and job share will be considered, subject to operational needs.

Salary
£33,784 per annum, plus a contribution of £9,787 towards membership of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.

About the Role
Around 5% of all Freedom of Information (FOI) requests made to government departments are handled by The National Archives, primarily for access to closed historical information. As an FOI Assessor, you will respond to these requests using your knowledge of the FOI Act, sound judgement, and research skills to analyse information and make high-quality decisions within tight timeframes. You will be part of a leading FOI Centre, working closely with government officials and liaising with members of the public about requests. This role offers the opportunity to develop your expertise as an information professional and gain a deep understanding of our unique collections.

Additional Information
Security clearance (SC) is required for this role, and candidates must have been resident in the UK for at least the past three years. Interviews will be held on-site at The National Archives, ideally during the week commencing 18th May 2026. Applicants must submit a personal statement of no more than 1200 words demonstrating how they meet the essential criteria. The role is unable to offer sponsorship.

Requirements

Experience
- Ability to carry out research using complex documents and summarise findings clearly
- Experience working to tight deadlines and under pressure, with the ability to prioritise a heavy workload with little supervision
- Confident and able to negotiate at a senior level
- Knowledge of the Freedom of Information Act, including the application of exemptions

About You
- Strong team working skills with the ability to work on your own initiative
- Ability to make decisions using sound judgement while escalating issues as required

Desirable Criteria
- Experience assessing information in accordance with Freedom of Information exemptions
- Customer care skills with an understanding of the needs of researchers and users of The National Archives
- Ability to develop and adapt training materials and deliver training to a range of audiences
- IT literacy with experience of using FOI casework systems

Qualifications
SC clearance or willingness to obtain SC clearance is required. Candidates must have been resident in the UK for at least the past three years.
