About the Role
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is seeking a Healthcare Scientist to join the Respiratory and Vaccine Preventable Bacteria Reference Unit (RVPBRU) at its ISO 15189 accredited laboratory in Colindale, London. The RVPBRU provides national reference services for a range of respiratory and vaccine-preventable bacteria using advanced phenotypic and genotypic methods to support disease surveillance and outbreak analysis.
This role involves working within the Vaccine Preventable Bacteria Section (VPBS) on a 7-month research project to improve a diagnostic immunoassay test that detects Streptococcus pneumoniae capsular antigen in urine. The project aims to evaluate new monoclonal antibodies to broaden serotype detection or improve assay specificity using the Bioplex immunoassay platform.
The successful candidate will work under the supervision of a senior scientist to prepare reagents, design and run experiments, analyse results, and contribute to the general running of the laboratory. Full training will be provided.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform immunoassay tests using the Bioplex platform and interpret results
- Prepare bespoke reagents and assist in experiment design
- Analyse data and plan follow-up experiments with guidance
- Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure safe working practices
- Assist with documentation such as SOPs and risk assessments
- Support training of other staff as appropriate
- Adhere to quality management, health and safety, and confidentiality requirements

Working Environment
This is a laboratory-based role requiring Counter-Terrorist Check security clearance. Hybrid working is not available for this position.
Experience
- Experience working in a microbiology laboratory at containment level 2
- Experience with routine bacteriology techniques and immunoassays
- Significant postgraduate experience in a relevant field
- Ability to analyse experimental results and make informed decisions
- Good computer skills including Microsoft Office
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Qualifications
- BSc in Biomedical Sciences, Microbiology, or equivalent qualification
