About the Role
The viral vaccines section is part of UKHSA’s Immunisation and Vaccine Preventable Diseases division based at Colindale. As a Senior Scientist (Epidemiologist), you will be a key member of the team responsible for surveillance, epidemiology, and investigation of Varicella and other viral vaccine preventable infections. Your role will involve developing, managing, and maintaining surveillance databases and providing specialist scientific support for national and international surveillance programmes, research projects, and outbreak investigations.

You will design and develop new surveillance and data management systems in collaboration with epidemiologists and other specialists, conduct complex statistical analyses, and produce surveillance outputs. You will also manage technical and analytical aspects of outbreak investigations, coordinate data collection, advise incident teams, and contribute to scientific publications and reports.

Additional responsibilities include contributing to research proposals, coordinating data collection for research projects, supervising staff in producing departmental outputs, presenting findings at national and international meetings, and delivering training on epidemiology and surveillance of vaccine preventable diseases.

Requirements

Experience
- Interpreting and evaluating epidemiological data using SQL databases, spreadsheets, and statistical packages (R) to an advanced level
- Conducting statistical analysis of large and complex epidemiological datasets
- Managing epidemiological studies and outbreak investigations
- Writing scientific papers and project reports
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing own workload effectively
- Analyzing, summarizing, and interpreting complex epidemiological data
- Communicating ideas and methods clearly with excellent oral and written skills
- Identifying and solving practical problems
- Managing multiple tasks simultaneously while meeting deadlines
- Making informed decisions based on incomplete information

About you
- Enthusiastic and motivated to contribute to public health and epidemiology
- Able to liaise effectively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders including clinical, scientific, and public health professionals
- Experienced in presenting scientific papers at national and international conferences (desirable)
- Skilled in creating and delivering presentations to diverse audiences (desirable)

Qualifications
- First degree in a science subject such as biological sciences or population health
- Higher degree in Epidemiology, Public Health, or an allied subject
- Postgraduate work or study in public health, epidemiology, or an allied subject
