About the Role
The post holder will teach courses within the SEND department, both onsite and occasionally in community settings. They will ensure high-quality delivery through the implementation of Quality Assurance processes and contribute to the College’s growth by supporting a vibrant curriculum and improving learner outcomes. The role also involves assisting with focused curriculum development, personalised employment support, and learner progression.
The post holder will help meet the College’s strategic goals, particularly targeting priority groups under the Adult Skills Fund, and will collaborate with the Head of Curriculum & Quality to deliver a high-quality programme aligned with learner and employer needs.
The allocation of hours is outlined in the job advert and may be subject to change depending on business needs. The post holder will undertake a teaching commitment for the work offered and ensure availability to provide learners with a continuous learning experience and minimal disruption to their programme.
Key responsibilities include planning, preparing, delivering, and evaluating all courses, ensuring alignment with exams, internal syllabi, and college processes. The post holder will deliver stimulating and engaging sessions that inspire learners, embedding college and course expectations along with British Values and life skills.
They will manage the learning process effectively by guiding and supporting learners, differentiating teaching to meet individual needs, and ensuring learners are appropriately challenged and supported throughout their journey.
All relevant teaching, learning, and assessment materials must be uploaded and maintained on the virtual learning environment, aligned to unit delivery and accessible from the start of the programme.
Accurate and timely updating of learner, group, and progress tracking documents is required, including attendance and punctuality records.
The post holder will set challenging teaching and learning objectives relevant to the course intent, agree individual learning plans with learners, set and monitor SMART targets, and provide meaningful feedback.
Systematic assessment of learners’ work with timely developmental feedback is essential, as is involving learners in reflecting on and improving their own performance.
Providing subject specialist information, advice, and support to learners, including progression advice and referrals to careers teams, is part of the role.
They will identify, refer, and plan additional support for learners in liaison with the learning support team and work with exams and curriculum support teams to ensure accurate records and exam registrations.
Planning opportunities for learners to experience out-of-classroom contexts such as placements, volunteering, and visits is expected.
Collaboration with the Head of Curriculum & Quality to develop exciting programmes that enable learners to gain new skills, qualifications, and knowledge aligned to their goals and employment aspirations is required.
Supporting the college marketing team by participating in key events and promoting courses to new learners and employers is part of the role.
Writing detailed and accurate course outlines to support department and college promotion, conducting interviews and diagnostic assessments for potential learners, and attending relevant meetings are also required.
The post holder must keep up to date with internal and external assessments and examinations, liaise with the Exams team to ensure smooth operation, and maintain awareness of Health & Safety, Equality & Diversity, Safeguarding, Prevent, and Data Protection/GDPR requirements.
Compliance with Professional Standards for Teachers and Trainers in Education and Training and undertaking other duties commensurate with the grade are expected.
Responsibility for Health & Safety within own work area, commitment to professional development, adherence to College policies including Equal Opportunities and Safeguarding, and being a proactive team member working towards department and College strategic targets are essential.
The post holder will support the improvement, growth, and sustainability of the College and undertake any other comparable duties as reasonably required.
Experience
- Experience of teaching in Adult Education or Further Education post-16 college or training environment.
- Experience teaching a range of levels up to GCSE English/Maths, including preparation for GCSE and functional skills.
- Experience of quality improvement processes which support and develop practice.

Qualifications
- An appropriate teaching qualification for the Post 16 Sector (e.g. DET / Cert. Ed. or equivalent) and/or willingness to complete a Level 4 qualification within the first year of appointment.
- A qualification in the subject specialism to at least Level 4 (e.g. HND, 1st Degree), or in-depth knowledge with a minimum of 3 years’ substantial experience teaching English/Maths.
- Level 2 (GCSE or equivalent) qualifications in English and Mathematics.
- A1 Assessors qualification or equivalent.
- V1 Verifiers qualification or equivalent.
