The Macmillan Cancer Support Worker will play a vital role in supporting cancer patients throughout their cancer pathway by providing general information and support about cancer and cancer services. This role involves sensitive, daily communication with patients, relatives, carers, and health and social care professionals, requiring empathy, understanding, diplomacy, honesty, and integrity.
You will proactively identify patient and carer needs using approved tools and procedures, coordinate access to information and education resources, and empower patients and carers to make informed decisions about their care. The role requires sound judgment to assess the complexity of situations, provide appropriate advice, and escalate concerns to registered practitioners when necessary.
Key responsibilities include coordinating appointments and investigations, supporting the delivery of Cancer Waiting Times targets, acting as a point of contact for patients and carers, facilitating access to health and wellbeing services, providing administrative support to Clinical Nurse Specialists, and contributing to audit, governance, research, and service development activities.
This is a patient-facing role centred on compassionate communication with people affected by cancer, requiring excellent interpersonal skills and a full understanding of Personalised Care and the 'Recovery Package' including Holistic Needs Assessments, personalised care and support plans, Treatment Summaries, and Personalised Stratified Follow-up.

Experience
- Significant proven experience delivering high standards in a fast-paced, high volume customer care environment
- Ability to deal independently and efficiently with a range of issues
- Proven administrative experience
- Desirable: Experience in NHS administration, supervising staff, working across organisational boundaries, and using healthcare IT systems such as PIMS, CIS, EPR, EPIC
- Customer service experience is advantageous

Qualifications
- Essential: Comprehensive secondary education with a minimum of 5 GCSEs
- Educated to diploma level or NVQ 3, City and Guilds certificate level in business administration or equivalent
- Evidence of formal further training in short courses and significant hospital administration experience
- Desirable: Further education, customer service qualification/training, IT qualifications (e.g. ECDL), counselling, psychology or mental health qualifications (e.g. Counselling Diploma or Level 3 RQF Understanding Mental Health)
