The funding for three full time Medical Education Fellows at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust (LGT) has been made available from the undergraduate education tariff. These posts will be focussed on developing the undergraduate education experience for medical students at LGT. Each post is a twelve month role aimed at those who wish to build on their personal teaching experience and develop expertise in educational theory and practice in a supervised environment. There will be three post holders - one will be based at the Lewisham site, and two at the Woolwich site although cross site work will be needed. There will be plenty of flexibility and opportunity for post-holders to work cross-site should their projects warrant it. The posts are designed to provide a wide range of educational experience for trainees who wish to make a commitment to education as part of their career. An enthusiasm for teaching is a prerequisite, but no assumptions will be made about formal knowledge of educational theory or practice. Hands-on teaching will be central to the post, as will a critical engagement with educational issues around providing undergraduate training in a changing context, both nationally and locally. There is inbuilt flexibility within the roles such that the post-holders can pursue their own areas of interest. LGT has an expanding and forward-looking simulation faculty as well as faculty members at the forefront of gamification in Medical Education (e.g. escape rooms). There will also be the potential to develop leadership and management skills within education. The clinical commitment will ensure that the post holder maintains their clinical involvement throughout the year but this is optional and not mandatory to the role. This clinical component will include out of hours work, depending on the appointees clinical specialty and experience. The post holder will have an opportunity to undertake relevant educational programmes. Time for such development will be agreed with the Director of Medical Education. The Trust will contribute financial support to the post-holders for an educational qualification, for example, the KCL PG Certificate.
