Description
About the Borough This special place in South West London between the capital and the country has been a Royal borough longer than anywhere else - it is where the first kings of England were crowned. Today it is a vibrant and diverse borough, with a long history and strong cultural and community heritage. Kingston's riverside location, fantastic retail offer, historic market place and church, parks and gardens all make Kingston town centre the vibrant space it is, and each of our district town centres (Surbiton, New Malden, Tolworth and Chessington) have something unique to offer. Situated in Zone 6, Kingston is among the best-connected town centres in London – with direct train links from Kingston and Surbiton stations to Clapham Junction and London Waterloo, as well as Wimbledon for an interchange with the London Underground and Tramlink. Kingston’s people are innovative and entrepreneurial, and have a strong sense of community pride. The borough has been home to great industry and creativity for many years, reflected in assets such as the Rose Theatre, the International Youth Arts Festival and Kingston University, which boasts more new graduate business start-ups than any other. We have seen tremendous generosity and compassion within our communities, particularly in response to COVID-19, which is a demonstration of Kingston’s key strength. The council offers a strong level of support to vulnerable groups and those who need additional support, which has also increased significantly as a result of the pandemic. Like most places, the average age of our population is rising as more people are living longer, so we are working closely with residents to help them maintain their independence and further improve the cost effectiveness of our service to meet the ongoing rise in demand. Kingston is home to people from diverse and interesting cultures and backgrounds, which helps to create the rich sense of community shared across the borough. In particular, Kingston has a large Sri Lankan Tamil community and is home to more people from Korea than any other part of the UK. About the Role Our two Outreach and Engagement Managers manage the day to day operations of the Music Service. They manage a tutor workforce of 60, plus an Instrument & Music Support Officer and 10 Music Centre Stewards. They ensure that the young people of the Royal Borough of Kingston have a range of affordable, accessible and inclusive musical activities on offer to them including events, ensembles, lessons and instrument hire both in and out of school. As Outreach & Engagement Manager, you will ensure the ongoing musical success of the service through: Expanding the range of affordable musical opportunities for young people across the borough through both internal delivery and partnership collaborations. Managing progression routes for children and young people, ensuring accessibility and inclusivity by working closely with schools and partners. Overseeing the development, promotion and delivery of high-quality music activities and events for children and young people. Working with school leaders to support music teaching and learning in schools. Collaborating with colleagues across Culture and Heritage and the wider council to develop a coherent public engagement offer. You will be based in the KMS offices at the Hook Centre where we work closely with our library and adult education colleagues. About Us Kingston Music Service (KMS) nurtures young people in the Royal Borough of Kingston regardless of background to create, perform, be inspired by and celebrate the music they love; reaching all corners of the borough, ensuring children who want to make music are able to. Each week, our skilled team of approximately 60 tutors provides instrumental and vocal lessons to over 1,500 pupils in schools and music centres. KMS hosts a variety of events, including primary singing festivals, family concerts, and school workshops. Our 11 ensembles, which feature String Orchestras, Jazz Bands, Percussion Ensembles, and Concert Bands, perform regularly throughout the year. KMS is part of South West London Music, the Hub Lead Organisation for SW London who work with partners to ensure that all children and young people in South West London have access to inspiring, enjoyable and brilliant music education. About You We are seeking to appoint an experienced music education professional with excellent organisational skills who is energetic, resilient, a tactful team player and an insightful manager. Your strong leadership skills and ability to problem solve will enable you to question and challenge conventional thinking, fostering innovation and creativity to develop the services offered by KMS. A commitment to embedding equity, diversity, and inclusion across our work is essential, along with proven business acumen and up-to-date knowledge of national policies and strategies for music education.
