About the Role
An excellent opportunity has arisen within the London Borough of Redbridge for a highly experienced Principal Lawyer – Litigation to join the Council and provide a comprehensive and professional legal service. You will report to the Chief Legal Officer within the Legal Department and work closely with other Council departmental clients and specialist departments.
Your responsibilities will include managing the Litigation Team and providing expert advice, guidance, and practical assistance on local government law in areas such as civil and criminal litigation, regulatory matters, housing law, and corporate governance. You will represent the Council at courts or tribunals and conduct the Council’s legal caseload relating to general civil and criminal litigation, including negotiation and drafting of settlement terms and consent orders, handling appeals and inquiries, and managing enforcement cases in Magistrates’, Crown, County, and High Courts.
You will also be responsible for providing advocacy services at public inquiries, tribunals, and civil courts in relation to your areas of specialism, including Planning, Highways, Housing, Licensing, Land Tribunal matters, Contracts, Public Procurement, and Regulatory Laws.
This role requires utilising skills and experience gained in a similar position to effectively lead and deliver high-quality legal services to the Council.
Experience
- Proven experience conducting civil and criminal litigation, housing, and regulatory law.
- Advocacy experience in civil and criminal litigation, including Planning, Property, Housing, Contracts, and Regulatory matters.
- Experience advising in a local government or similar environment.
- Demonstrated ability to manage a team of lawyers.
