About the Role
An excellent opportunity has arisen within the London Borough of Redbridge for a highly experienced Principal Lawyer – Litigation to join the Council and provide a comprehensive and professional legal service. Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer within the Legal Department, you will work closely with other Council departmental clients and specialist departments.

You will manage the Litigation Team and provide expertise, advice, guidance, and practical assistance on local government law in civil and criminal litigation, regulatory matters, housing law, corporate governance, including representation at courts or tribunals.

Your responsibilities will include managing the Council’s legal caseload in general civil and criminal litigation and related projects, negotiating and drafting settlement terms and consent orders, conducting appeals and inquiries, and handling enforcement cases in the Magistrates’, Crown, County, and High Courts.

You will also provide advocacy services at public inquiries, tribunals, and civil courts in areas such as Planning, Highways, Housing, Licensing, Land Tribunal matters, Contracts, Public Procurement, and Regulatory Laws.

Experience
- Conducting civil and criminal litigation, housing and regulatory laws
- Advocacy experience in civil/criminal litigation, including Planning, Property, Housing, Contracts, and Regulatory matters
- Advising in local government or a similar environment
- Managing a team of lawyers

Qualifications
Hold a Solicitor, Barrister, FILEX, or similar legal qualification and be authorised to conduct legal work.
