HMP Pentonville, Caledonian Road, London N7 8TT
Hours
Shift patterns covering 24 hours a day, 7 days a week including evenings, some nights, weekends and public holidays. Initial training is 37 hours per week. After training, you can choose to work 37, 39, or 41 hours per week.
Salary
£39,493 - £44,474 per year (depending on weekly hours worked). All salary figures include applicable allowances for the role and location.
About the Role
Prison officers protect the public and make a positive impact on prisoners' lives. This fast-paced role involves a variety of responsibilities including peacekeeping, counselling, teaching, and maintaining safety and security within the prison environment. You will build constructive, positive, and professional relationships with prisoners, supporting them at potentially their lowest points. Teamwork is essential to keep the prison and everyone working there safe. This role requires resilience, empathy, strong communication skills, and a commitment to quality service. You will be required to work various shifts and some weekends. The role offers a unique and rewarding career helping to protect the public and rehabilitate offenders.
Additional Information
This role is not eligible for new Skilled Worker visas under current immigration rules. Applicants must have and maintain the legal right to live and work in the Civil Service and the UK. A driving licence and own transport are beneficial but not essential. The role requires passing medical and fitness assessments, including eyesight and hearing standards. Tattoos are permitted if not offensive or intimidating; facial tattoos are generally not acceptable except for cultural, religious, or medical reasons. Residency in the UK for the last 3 years is required to work in a high security (Category A) prison.
Experience
No formal qualifications or prior experience are required. Personal qualities such as communication, influencing skills, effective decision-making, care, and commitment to quality are essential.
About you
You should be at least 18 years old, resilient, empathetic, and able to build positive relationships with a diverse range of people. You must be physically fit to meet the demands of the role and able to work varied shifts including nights and weekends. You must have good eyesight and hearing standards without aids. Tattoos must not be offensive or intimidating. You must meet Civil Service nationality requirements and have the legal right to work in the UK. Teamwork and supporting colleagues are vital to success in this role.
