About the Role
The British Museum is seeking a Project Curator to join the Department of Africa, Oceania and the Americas, working on the African Histories and Heritage Programme. You will play a leading role in delivering the 4-year research and education project ‘Reconnecting Eastern African Collections and Histories’ (REACH). This project aims to significantly expand knowledge of the British Museum’s Eastern Africa collection and increase its impact by producing an object-based history of the ivory caravan trade and colonial rule (c1800-1914) in Eastern Africa.

Working collaboratively with an international network of partner museums and community stakeholders in Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda, you will help generate new knowledge about museum collections, build strong partnerships, and share knowledge in East Africa through bespoke schools’ programmes and other activities. Your role will be vital in connecting people with the collection, expanding curatorial practice, and advancing interpretations of African histories and heritage at the British Museum.

You will join a growing team within the African History and Heritage Programme, which investigates how material culture from the British Museum collection can transform the understanding and presentation of Africa's past and heritage globally. The programme emphasizes knowledge exchange, collaboration, and engaging young people in Africa through archaeological, anthropological, and historical research. This role is pivotal to the expansion and delivery of the programme.

Experience
Proven experience as a curator or researcher with strong research expertise in Eastern African history, anthropology or material culture. Experience in archival research related to African collections or histories is essential. Demonstrated ability to engage communities, partners or public audiences and a track record of research outputs. Experience in project management and collaborative working with international partners is required. Knowledge of Kiswahili or another East African language and willingness to travel internationally are necessary. Experience with museum learning programmes is advantageous.
