About the Role
This three-year fixed term Project Curator role supports the development and delivery of the British Museum’s Mughals to Raj exhibition and Assam textile loan project. Working closely with the Lead Curator, you will contribute to exhibition research, publication development, public programming, project archiving, and ongoing documentation of the South Asia collection. As a core member of the project team, you will collaborate across departments and with external partners to help deliver a major international exhibition and a significant loan exhibition.

This role offers an excellent opportunity for an early career South Asia specialist to develop curatorial expertise while contributing to research, interpretation, collections management, and public engagement activities.

Key responsibilities include supporting the planning and delivery of the exhibition, managing exhibition documentation, object records, digital imagery and project databases, coordinating with lenders and partners, conducting curatorial and object research, drafting and editing exhibition texts, contributing to public engagement activities, and assisting with the Documentation and Digitisation programme.

The British Museum is undergoing its largest transformation in nearly 300 years, including building and gallery changes, new audience engagement methods, and evolving ways of working, all guided by the founder Hans Sloane’s vision of a museum accessible to everyone, everywhere.

Experience
Experience in South Asian art history or a related discipline is essential. Proven ability in research, writing, and communicating complex information clearly to diverse audiences is required. Experience working with digital collections, imagery, and project documentation is also necessary.

About you
You will have a strong academic background with a postgraduate qualification, preferably a PhD, in South Asian art history or a related field. You are a collaborative and diplomatic team player who can also work independently and manage competing priorities effectively. Organised, accurate, and resilient, you thrive in a busy project environment and maintain high standards while meeting deadlines. You communicate effectively and build positive relationships with colleagues, partners, and external stakeholders at all levels.

Qualifications
A postgraduate qualification such as a PhD in South Asian art history or a related discipline is particularly valued. High proficiency in Microsoft Office and confidence working with digital collections and project documentation are essential.
