About the Role
The Senior Phototesting Technician/Technologist will organise and carry out clinical phototesting on patients as part of the clinical investigation of photosensitivity within the Photodermatology Unit. This includes complex procedures such as monochromator and solar simulator phototesting, minimal erythema and phototoxic dose testing, requiring meticulous attention to detail. The role involves managing patient admissions for phototesting and other investigations, providing specialist clinical advice on photoprotection and topical therapy under consultant supervision, and supervising calibration and quality control of sophisticated optical equipment. The postholder will maintain clinical databases, produce monthly and annual reports summarising diagnoses, patient numbers, and procedures performed, and collaborate with other Photodermatology centres and the Medical Physics Department. They will lead training programmes for technologists and nursing staff, manage appraisals, competency assessments, and participate in recruitment. The role also includes active participation in departmental meetings, audits, research projects, and quality assurance to ensure compliance with Trust policies and standards of care. The postholder will contribute to patient education, teach MSc students and course delegates, support staff development, and coordinate clinical research studies, ensuring adherence to protocols and Good Clinical Practice guidelines. Leadership responsibilities include managing the Phototesting Service, implementing new techniques, and ensuring effective team working and service delivery in line with Trust and departmental policies. The role demands professionalism, confidentiality, and a commitment to continuous professional development and quality improvement within a multidisciplinary environment.

Requirements

Experience
Extensive experience in clinical phototesting and managing complex clinical procedures involving photodermatology equipment. Proven ability to organise and lead clinical services and training programmes. Experience in coordinating clinical research studies and working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.

Qualifications
Relevant scientific or clinical qualifications related to phototesting or dermatology technology. Commitment to continuing professional development and compliance with mandatory training. Experience or willingness to engage in research and quality assurance activities. Familiarity with Trust policies, Health & Safety regulations, and Good Clinical Practice guidelines.
