About the Role
Hackney is one of the UK’s highest performing local authorities, serving one of London’s best places to live and work. Hackney Council has transformed its reputation and the borough itself, bringing jobs, investment, and securing a lasting legacy from the 2012 Games. The City and Hackney Public Health Service is a dynamic and dedicated team serving both Hackney and the City of London, known for innovation and passion in improving local health outcomes. The team is committed to a ‘Health in All Policies’ approach, working collaboratively across sectors.

As a Senior Public Health Specialist, you will join a motivated team supporting the Director of Public Health to improve health outcomes and reduce inequalities across Hackney and the City of London. You will work across all domains of public health, with additional training and support as needed.

This fixed term role (until 31 March 2028) will lead the co-development, implementation, and evaluation of a pilot programme aimed at building workforce and community capacity to promote healthy weight. Key responsibilities include:

- Strengthening healthy weight competence and confidence among frontline staff and volunteers supporting individuals at high risk of obesity in various service and community settings
- Improving awareness of, and access to, information about actions individuals can take to achieve and maintain a healthy weight
- Developing and implementing a plan to address and reduce weight stigma across Hackney and the City

While based within a central team, you will collaborate closely with colleagues across two local authorities, health and voluntary sector partners, and directly with communities.

A Standard DBS check is required for this post.

Hackney Council values its staff as its most outstanding asset, committed to serving residents and achieving organisational goals. We promote a fair and open anonymous selection process and encourage applications from diverse backgrounds.

About you
Motivated and collaborative, able to work across multiple domains of public health. Committed to reducing health inequalities and improving health outcomes. Able to work effectively with diverse partners including local authorities, health services, voluntary sector, and communities. Aligned with Hackney Council’s values of being Proud, Ambitious, Pioneering, Open, Proactive, and Inclusive.
