About the Role
HM Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS) is seeking talented Software Developers in Test to join the Digital Technology Services (DTS) directorate. As part of the Ministry of Justice, HMCTS supports the judiciary across England and Wales by running courts and tribunals and processing outcomes. This role offers the opportunity to work in a specialist technology directorate committed to providing excellent IT and digital support.

In this role, you will write, debug, and refactor test code while leading test automation efforts within CI/CD environments. You will collaborate closely with software developers to ensure comprehensive unit test coverage and help shape the culture and best practices within the Test Centre of Excellence. Mentoring and coaching junior engineers will be a key part of your responsibilities.

The role involves working with a broad range of modern technologies including Playwright, Rest Assured, Java, JavaScript, TypeScript, Power Apps, Angular, PostgreSQL, Microservices, Azure cloud infrastructure, Gatling, SauceLabs, accessibility testing tools, Jenkins, Dynatrace, Kubernetes, Docker, Jira, Confluence, and Fortify.

This is a permanent position requiring Security Clearance (SC) level as a condition of appointment.

Requirements

Experience
- Proven experience leading test automation in CI/CD environments.
- Expertise in writing automated testing scripts within core technology stacks.
- Strong understanding of the Software Development Lifecycle and Agile principles.
- Experience with REST web services and API inspection tools.
- Familiarity with bug tracking software and effective issue management.
- Ability to analyse test results, identify patterns, and translate findings into business impact.
- Experience in accessibility testing (manual and automated) ensuring WCAG compliance.
- Ability to design and execute non-functional test cases including performance and security testing.

Qualifications
- To apply for this role, successful completion of Security Clearance (SC) level is required.

- Demonstrable technical skills aligned with the Government Digital and Data (GDD) Capability Framework including development process optimisation, information security, modern development standards, software engineering, and systems integration.
- Completion of a coding task as part of the application process is required.
