About the Role
The Specialist Pharmacist in Cancer & Technical Services will act as an Authorised Pharmacist responsible for the final check and release of aseptically prepared products, ensuring compliance with legislation and best practice. This role includes checking and releasing unlicensed specials and ready-to-administer products such as parenteral nutrition, contributing to Good Manufacturing Practice documentation, and applying Good Clinical Practice principles in supervising and releasing Investigational Medicinal Products (IMPs) for clinical trials.

The post-holder will be trained to work within the multidisciplinary adult nutrition team, managing prescribing, monitoring, and clinical care of patients on parenteral nutrition. Responsibilities include clinical screening and validation of chemotherapy prescriptions, contributing to outpatient, day case, and inpatient cancer patient care using established treatment guidelines, and liaising with the chemotherapy day unit to meet patient needs.

Clinical services involve medication reconciliation, prescription screening, advising healthcare professionals and patients on medicines management, and participating in Consultant or Specialist Nurse-led ward rounds. The role demands expert clinical and pharmaceutical knowledge to produce accurate clinical and technological documentation, interpret complex situations, maintain communication with the Clinical Pharmacy team, and contribute to discharge planning and patient counselling.

The Specialist Pharmacist will also provide an out-of-hours emergency pharmacy service on a rotational basis, including securing the pharmacy department, supplying urgent medication, and participating in the Trust’s major incident scheme. Participation in late duty, weekend, and bank holiday rotas is required.

Governance duties include reporting adverse drug events, promoting effective prescribing in line with formulary and NICE guidance, and supporting adherence to Trust policies and clinical governance agendas.

The role involves staff management and training responsibilities, including identifying and meeting own training needs, providing medication-related training to pharmacy colleagues and clinical staff, and undertaking continuous professional development.

Research and development activities include participation in research and clinical audits to improve pharmaceutical services.

Effective communication and relationship management are essential, requiring collaboration with multidisciplinary teams and pharmacy staff, clear and sensitive communication about patient issues, and acting as a role model within the pharmacy team.

Experience
Experience in clinical pharmacy, particularly in cancer services, aseptic preparation, and medication management is essential. Proven ability to work within multidisciplinary teams and participate in clinical trials is highly desirable.

Qualifications
Registered Pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). Relevant postgraduate qualifications or specialist accreditation in oncology or clinical pharmacy are advantageous. Commitment to continuous professional development and adherence to Trust policies and clinical governance standards is expected.
