About the Role
As a Speech and Language Therapist Band 5, you will demonstrate clinical expertise in assessing, treating, and managing language and communication difficulties in school-aged children. You will provide appropriate interventions, evaluate outcomes, and apply evidence-based practice and outcome measures. Your role involves making differential diagnoses, developing clear care plans, and communicating complex condition-related information empathetically to clients, carers, families, and multidisciplinary teams. You will work closely with clients and their families to agree on management plans, handle initial complaints sensitively, and form productive relationships with individuals who may have challenging communication difficulties.

You will develop skills in motivating clients and carers to engage in therapy, manage children with challenging behaviours using appropriate strategies, and monitor progress against agreed targets. Reflection on practice with peers and supervisors, maintaining accurate case notes and reports in line with departmental and professional standards, and contributing to multi-agency assessments including statutory educational procedures are key responsibilities.

The role requires awareness of legal frameworks such as Safeguarding Children, SEN procedures, and working with vulnerable adults. You will be accountable for your professional actions, working within defined protocols and codes of conduct, and will have access to appraisal within an Individual Performance Framework. You will also develop knowledge of Clinical Governance principles and their application to professional practice.

This position offers the opportunity to work independently while receiving appropriate support and supervision to enhance your clinical skills and professional development.

Requirements

Experience
Basic clinical experience in speech and language therapy is expected, particularly in the assessment and management of language and communication difficulties in school-aged children. Experience in working within multidisciplinary teams and managing caseloads independently is desirable.

About you
You should be empathetic, possess excellent communication skills, and be able to work effectively with clients, carers, families, and professionals. You must be able to manage challenging behaviours and situations sensitively, demonstrate motivation and commitment to professional development, and work independently while seeking support when necessary. Strong organisational and negotiation skills are important, as is the ability to reflect on practice and apply evidence-based approaches.

Qualifications
You must hold a relevant qualification in Speech and Language Therapy and be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Knowledge of current policies and procedures related to education, safeguarding, and clinical governance is essential. Commitment to maintaining professional standards and adherence to local and national guidelines is required.
