About the Role
HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS) is an agency of the Ministry of Justice supporting the administration of courts and tribunals to ensure justice is delivered effectively. The User Researcher role is part of the Digital and Technology Services (DTS) directorate, focused on redesigning and rebuilding services around user needs. This includes digital services, physical court environments, and telephony services.

The User Research team produces actionable insights through primary research to inform and validate user experience design. The team champions user-led design principles and agile working to continuously improve HMCTS services and products.

As a User Researcher, you will work independently within multidisciplinary teams to plan and conduct research using a variety of methods tailored to project needs. You will source participants, conduct user testing, present findings to influence design decisions, and communicate insights to project teams and stakeholders. Your work will impact a diverse range of users including citizens, legal professionals, and judges.

You will advocate for user-centred design, ensuring research evidence shapes product and design discussions. Flexibility and willingness to undertake other duties commensurate with the role are expected.

Experience
- Demonstrable experience conducting primary public-facing qualitative research in roles such as market, social, or user research.
- Skilled in selecting and applying appropriate research methods to generate insights into user behaviour and needs.
- Strong research and analytical skills with the ability to synthesise multiple data sources into clear, actionable recommendations.
- Understanding of user-centred design principles and tools.
- Experience building consensus and improving stakeholder relationships through evidence-based communication.
