ABOUT US
Transforming lives through excellent education
London Met is an extraordinary institution. Equity and social inclusion have always been our driving principles, and it's what makes the University so unique. Our organisation is distinctive, both in its eclectic and diverse community of students and staff, and also for its historical role in serving some of London’s most deprived boroughs. Everything we do is underpinned by our philosophy that an individual should have the opportunity to transform their life through the power of education.
Equipping our students with the tools for their future is at the heart of our academic offering. We pride ourselves on providing our students with access to a wealth of opportunities and professions. Our graduates benefit personally, but also contribute their unique perspectives to society, culture, public service and the economy in all areas of London, the UK and around the world.
The School of Social Sciences & Professions is a vibrant academic community offering a diverse portfolio of programmes in Criminology, Community Leadership, Education, Health, International Relations & Politics, Social Work, Sociology and Youth.
ABOUT THE POST
We invite applications for four full-time Academic Mentor posts within the School. These posts will provide academic support to Undergraduate and Postgraduate students in either the Health, Psychology (two opportunities) or Social Work, Community and Youth subject areas through: one-to-one sessions and group workshops, assisting students to develop academic and study skills.
The student body in the School is amongst the most socially diverse in the UK. We have high levels of students from non-traditional backgrounds - mature students, students from minoritised ethnic backgrounds, student parents, the first in their families to enter Higher Education and who come from areas with high levels of deprivation. We have a significant number of international students.
The successful candidates will work effectively in supporting students to develop and strengthen relevant academic skills, to work with course teams in embedding learning development support within teaching programmes and to offer workshops on topics such as writing a dissertation. They will also support course teams in implementing the principles of the University's Education for Social Justice Framework.
The successful candidate will have an exciting, innovative and research informed approach to learning development. They will have a strong commitment to the University's mission and strategic plan; a "coaching and developing" approach when dealing with colleagues and students; and working collegially; valuing the contribution of others and sharing knowledge and expertise.
As part of the interview process you will be asked to deliver a 10 minute presentation on the subject: "How I would provide academic support to the diverse student population in the Health / Psychology / Social Work, Community and Youth and subject area".
Please ensure to clearly indicate which subject area you are applying for.
Closing Date: 08 November 2023
Interviews due to be held in the week commencing 27 November 2023
