Description
ABOUT US Transforming lives through excellent education London Met is an extraordinary institution. Equity and social inclusion have always been our driving principles, and it's what makes the University so unique. Our organisation is distinctive, both in its eclectic and diverse community of students and staff, and also for its historical role in serving some of London’s most deprived boroughs. Everything we do is underpinned by our philosophy that an individual should have the opportunity to transform their life through the power of education. Equipping our students with the tools for their future is at the heart of our academic offering. We pride ourselves on providing our students with access to a wealth of opportunities and professions. Our graduates benefit personally, but also contribute their unique perspectives to society, culture, public service and the economy in all areas of London, the UK and around the world. ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT Library Services and Special Collections support the University’s learning, teaching, and research activities and provide access to educational and research resources, vibrant learning spaces and study facilities, and specialist support in making the best use of information in all forms. The special collections include a fascinating range of rare books and archives for students, staff and wider community to research a history of the University, alongside related histories of local business, the Irish in Britain, and different politics, labour history and working-class cultures. ABOUT THE POST The Special Collections team is seeking to appoint a fixed-term Archives and Library Assistant (Graduate Trainee). This role provides an excellent opportunity to gain wide-ranging experience of library and archives work in a professionally forward-looking environment that places all our users at the centre of its continuous improvement. We are looking for someone with excellent interpersonal and organisational skills who has a genuine interest in helping and supporting our students, staff and wider community discover a range of historic material for research and general interest purposes. You will be comfortable using a variety of technologies and applications but happy to switch to routine and practical tasks within the library and archives. Highly organised and flexible in your approach, you will enjoy working collaboratively in a team and sharing knowledge with others. The successful candidate will have an interest in pursuing a career within archives and libraries and demonstrable experience of customer service or an administrative role, and meet the criteria set out in the person specification. They will enjoy working with a diverse range of users and have excellent communication and relevant IT skills. Hours of work and location may alter to reflect the changing needs of the service.
