About the Role
The Assistant Technical Officer (ATO) in Medicines Management plays a vital role within the pharmacy team at Whittington Hospital NHS Trust. Working primarily on designated wards, you will perform a range of pharmacy-related duties in accordance with set procedures to support safe and effective medicines management.

Ward-based responsibilities include daily stock replenishment, resolving stock issues, expiry date checks, removal of redundant or expired medication, stock control, and maintaining safe storage conditions including temperature monitoring. You will assist with dispensing discharge medicines to support patient flow and ensure pharmacy sundries are regularly replenished. You will also manage the transfer or return of medicines between wards and the pharmacy department following patient transfers or discharges.

In the stores and distribution area, you will assist with ordering and issuing stock items to wards and departments, supervise stock assembly including intravenous fluids, and manage returns from wards. You will respond to requests from ward teams and monitor stock levels to highlight any excessive returns.

Within the dispensary, you will assist in dispensing inpatient and outpatient prescriptions under supervision, prepare porter bags/boxes for medicine delivery, and support the satellite dispensary in line with dispensing and medicines management standards. After successful probation, you will have the opportunity to undertake medicines management accreditations and carry out additional duties such as transcribing and patient’s own drug checks under guidance.

Experience
Previous experience in a healthcare or pharmacy environment is desirable but not essential. Training and support will be provided to develop the necessary skills and knowledge.

Attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high standards of medicines management are essential. Good communication skills and the ability to liaise with ward staff and other healthcare professionals are important for this role.

Qualifications
No formal qualifications are required to apply; however, a willingness to learn and undertake training and accreditations as required is essential. Basic IT skills and the ability to use computer systems confidently are advantageous.
