About the Role
The Principal or Associate AV (Audio Visual) Design Consultant will contribute to the development and delivery of high-quality Audio Visual solutions within WSP UK’s Building Technology Systems (BTS) team. BTS operates at the intersection of technology, engineering and the built environment, offering integrated consultancy across ICT, AV, Smart Buildings, BMS and other technology integration. This role focuses on the successful technical delivery of AV projects rather than sector strategy. You will provide senior-level design expertise, guide junior colleagues and ensure coordinated and robust project outputs across all stages of design and implementation. Leading AV workstreams on assigned projects, you will work closely with multi-discipline teams, support client engagement and ensure designs are practical, well-integrated and aligned with operational needs. Your work will contribute to BTS’s reputation as a trusted provider of technically excellent and well-coordinated building technology design.

The role involves providing clear and visible technical leadership for AV workstreams, supporting coordination across all BTS disciplines, and contributing to cross-discipline collaboration within WSP UK. You will build client trust by demonstrating reliability, technical competence and thoughtful design leadership. Supporting project profitability and efficiency, you will provide accurate inputs for budgets, project planning and resourcing related to AV design activities, ensuring value for money, operational needs and buildability are considered.

Responsibilities include leading and promoting technically sound AV design aligned with client needs and building requirements, assessing and adopting new technologies and sustainable approaches, sharing best practices, and contributing to a positive challenge culture. You will build productive relationships with clients, partners and suppliers, support internal improvement initiatives, and mentor junior staff to encourage professional development. Additionally, you will support early-stage project activities, contribute to bids and proposals, and assist in identifying opportunities for follow-on work. You will also contribute to bid, contract and project reviews, ensuring documentation is clear, accurate and compliant with WSP standards.

Requirements

Experience
Demonstrable track record of delivering AV design within the built environment. Recognised technical capability with the ability to lead AV design packages independently. Experience developing design documentation including system layouts, schematics, equipment schedules and integration requirements. Ability to coordinate AV systems effectively with architecture, heritage constraints, acoustics, MEP and ICT infrastructure. Practical understanding of AV systems for hybrid events, immersive or flexible teaching spaces, performance environments and public-facing venues. Experience managing design activities, contributing to programme planning and adapting to changing client priorities. Ability to sketch and communicate technical detail graphically and clearly to clients, architects, engineers and contractors. Experience guiding junior colleagues and contributing to team capability building. Understanding of current and emerging trends in AV technology, user experience, digital collaboration and building technology convergence.

About you
Technically competent and confident leader with strong communication and collaboration skills. Proactive in adopting new methods and technologies. Able to build trust and productive relationships with clients and colleagues. Committed to mentoring and developing junior staff. Adaptable to changing priorities and able to work effectively within multi-disciplinary teams. Enthusiastic about continuous improvement and knowledge sharing.
