About the Role
Join Southwark Council’s bold, values-led Planning & Growth team and be at the heart of one of London’s most ambitious regeneration programmes. As a Building Control Inspector, you will play a key role in shaping a borough undergoing significant development, including multi-billion-pound projects like Elephant and Castle and Canada Water, and the delivery of 11,000 new council homes.
You will act as a technical specialist, providing expert advice to developers, architects, councillors, and internal stakeholders. Your responsibilities will include managing building control applications for buildings up to 18m, overseeing the dangerous structures service, ensuring compliance with the Building Safety Act 2022 and Fire Safety Act 2021, and supporting quality assurance through ISO9001 and building safety governance frameworks.
This role offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge construction projects, collaborate with key stakeholders such as the London Fire Brigade and Building Safety Regulator, and contribute to digital transformation initiatives using systems like Uniform, SAP, and the Modern Data Platform. You will be instrumental in delivering a world-class building control service that supports safe, high-quality construction across Southwark.
Experience
- Proven track record managing applications and inspections for mid-rise residential and commercial buildings
- Demonstrable experience in building control within a city or urban context, including large-scale residential and commercial applications
- Deep understanding of statutory building control processes, legislation, and dangerous structures
- Strong IT skills across MS Office and building control systems
About you
- Chartered professional with corporate membership of one or more of the following: RICS, CABE, IStructE, ICE, CIOB, IMechE, CIAT, RIBA, or IFE
- Confident communicator able to work across a wide range of stakeholders and deliver trusted, pragmatic advice

- Ability to manage multiple priorities with a sharp eye for detail and outcomes

Qualifications
- Must hold a Class 2 professional Building Controls Qualification
- Expert knowledge of Building Regulations, technical construction solutions, and the legislative framework
- Proven understanding of urban planning issues and ability to tackle strategic planning with clarity and creativity
