About the Role
The post holder will provide high-quality care to patients, ensuring prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care Programmed Activities. The role involves developing and maintaining the competencies required to carry out the duties of the post, ensuring that patients are involved in decisions about their care and responding to their views. The Consultant will collaborate with academic and clinical colleagues to enhance the Trust's translational research portfolio while meeting the full requirements of Good Clinical Practice and Research Governance. Responsibilities also include providing high-quality teaching to medical undergraduates and other healthcare professionals, acting as an educational supervisor and appraiser as delegated by the Clinical Director.
Performance Management
The Consultant will work with medical, nursing, and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance in clinical efficiency, quality of outcomes, financial management, and operational efficiency. This includes managing locum agency spend, monitoring the drug budget, and ensuring accuracy of clinical data for the team.
Medical Staff Management
The role requires ensuring compliance with European Working Time Directive (EWTD) and New Deal for resident doctors, managing leave for junior medical staff, and participating in the recruitment of junior medical staff as needed. The Consultant will also be responsible for the annual appraisal of all doctors in training, Trust doctors, Clinical Fellows, and non-consultant grades as delegated by the Clinical Director/General Manager.
Governance
The Consultant will review clinical outcomes using external benchmarking data, participate in clinical audits, incident reporting, and ensure adherence to clinical guidelines and protocols by junior medical staff. The role includes keeping informed about best practices in specialty areas and ensuring implications for practice changes are discussed with the Clinical Director.
Strategy and Business Planning
Participation in business planning and objective setting for the directorate and Trust is required, along with representing the Trust at appropriate clinical networks and external clinical meetings as delegated by the Clinical Director.
Leadership and Teamwork
The Consultant will demonstrate excellent leadership skills, work collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team, chair regular meetings for the specialties, and resolve conflicts through negotiation and discussion.
Experience
Must be medically qualified and maintain GMC specialist registration with a licence to practice.
