About the Role
The Defence Nuclear Organisation (DNO) is responsible for the provision of the UK’s nuclear deterrent, including submarines and nuclear warheads, and advises on nuclear planning and international cooperation. The DNO works alongside the Royal Navy, the Submarine Delivery Agency, and the Atomic Weapons Establishment as part of the Defence Nuclear Enterprise.

Within the Strategic Systems Performance Analysis and Assessment Group (SSPAG), the role focuses on assessing and predicting the performance of deterrent capabilities and operations. The Strategic Assessments team undertakes simulation modelling, operational analysis, and technical studies supporting the UK submarine fleet.

You will use, understand, and develop bespoke software tools to analyse submarine performance, supporting current operations and future procurement decisions. Your work will provide assurance that UK submarines remain safe, secure, and effective.

Key responsibilities include:
- Creating and using bespoke numerical models with MATLAB, Python, and Fortran
- Applying scientific knowledge to solve unfamiliar problems
- Signal processing and signal detection
- Operational analysis
- Analysis of ocean environments and submarine capabilities
- Geospatial analysis

The team will provide close support as you develop your knowledge. Please note the work station is underground with no windows and only stair access.

Requirements

Experience
- Some experience in numerical modelling and/or computational analysis
- Programming experience in languages such as Python, MATLAB, C++, or Fortran
- Experience solving complex technical problems
- Experience acquiring new skills with limited supervision
- Experience in statistical data analysis

About you
You will have a strong scientific or technical background with an interest in the underwater domain. You must be able to assimilate information across a broad range of topics and learn new skills independently. Due to the sensitive nature of the role, you must be a sole UK National.

Qualifications
Essential:
- A degree or equivalent in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) or other highly numerate subject
Desirable:
- A higher degree (MSc, MEng, PhD or equivalent) in a STEM or other highly numerate subject
- Experience in signal processing
- Technical or scientific experience related to the underwater domain, acoustics, or vibration
- Knowledge of submarine engineering and naval operations

Successful candidates must achieve Developed Vetting clearance. This role is reserved for sole UK Nationals. Candidates must declare any outside interests prior to employment.
