Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust is one of the UK’s busiest and most successful NHS foundation trusts, providing a full range of hospital and community services across south London and specialist care for patients from further afield. This pivotal leadership role is responsible for ensuring all statutory and mandatory building and engineering compliance requirements are met by both in-house teams and contracting partners, ensuring operational performance is effectively managed.

The successful candidate will bring a high level of technical expertise in building and engineering to support operational teams in delivering excellence, safety, and effective estate management. The role requires compassionate, inclusive, and accountable leadership aligned with the NHS Management and Leadership Framework and GSTT values, fostering psychologically safe environments and promoting equity, anti-racist practice, and fairness for staff, patients, and service users.

As part of the Essentia Leadership Team, the post holder will participate in a weekend rota every three months and be part of the Directorate on-call rota. The role ensures compliance with statutory, regulatory, best practice, HTM, and other relevant standards, providing expert advice on legislative changes and compliance implications.

Requirements

Experience
Proven track record in engineering compliance within Estates, Facilities, infrastructure, or a similarly complex operational environment. Detailed understanding of engineering requirements in a complex NHS or equivalent regulated setting. Experience leading complex services with evidence of service improvement, compliance, and effective stakeholder partnership working.

Qualifications
Essential:
- Education to first degree level or equivalent experience in an engineering discipline with additional specialist training.
- Authorised Person/Responsible Person training or qualifications.
- Health and Safety qualification such as NEBOSH, IOSH, or equivalent with demonstrable knowledge.
Desirable:
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

Knowledge and Skills
Advanced practical engineering skills with the ability to inspect, assess, and diagnose defects in complex healthcare engineering systems. Detailed technical understanding of legislation governing Building & Engineering services and ability to apply this in practice. Strong analytical skills to interpret complex data and develop effective plans. Proven ability to produce and present complex business cases.
