Location
Hybrid working based at any of our Core HQs in Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool or London (Canary Wharf) or our Scientific Campus in Porton Down. Hybrid workers are expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their contractual hours on-site (approximately 3 days a week pro rata).

About the Role
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) protects public health by preventing, preparing for, and responding to infectious diseases and environmental hazards. The Science, Strategy and Evidence Directorate leads on evaluation, epidemiological methods, and behavioural sciences to support UKHSA’s mission. The Evaluation & Epidemiological Sciences (EES) Division focuses on identifying science priorities, leading evaluations, providing rapid scientific advice, and supporting translation of evidence into policy and practice.

The Epidemiology and Information Scientist will contribute to evaluation and epidemiological science priorities by designing questionnaires and databases, conducting analyses, producing scientific reports, and preparing descriptive epidemiology. This role involves collaboration with local, regional, national colleagues, and external stakeholders.

Main responsibilities include undertaking epidemiological investigations, maintaining and improving databases, conducting statistical analyses using software such as Stata, R, ArcGIS, SQL, supporting research projects, contributing to scientific publications, and supporting quality and governance initiatives. The role also involves leadership in specific topic areas, supporting training and supervision, and contributing to policy and protocol development.

Experience
- Demonstrable knowledge of epidemiological investigation, surveillance principles, and public health data management including data quality, security, transmission, analysis, and reporting.
- Strong analytical skills with experience applying descriptive epidemiology and basic statistical methods.
- Proficiency in epidemiological, statistical, database, and mapping software such as Stata, R, GIS, network analysis, SQL, or similar platforms.
- Experience in producing scientific reports and contributing to research projects is desirable.
- Knowledge of information governance requirements including data protection and confidentiality.
- Experience in validating data and automated routines is advantageous.
- Awareness of health and social care environments and epidemiology information flows in NHS and allied services is desirable.
- Line management experience including appraising staff and managing performance is a plus.

Qualifications
- Educated to degree level in Public Health, Information Science, or related discipline.
- Master's qualification in public health or related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
- Relevant professional experience may be considered in lieu of formal qualifications.
