About the Role
The COBR Directorate protects the UK from crises through varied, fast-paced, and impactful work across the emergency management cycle. This senior role leads the development of the National Situation Centre's data science and geospatial data science capabilities. You will provide functional and professional leadership to SitCen's data scientists and line management to the G7-led Data Science, Response Data, Biothreats, and Geospatial teams. Key responsibilities include ensuring the efficiency and quality of analytical coding by setting standards, processes, and tooling, building and maintaining data pipelines within SitCen's Colab framework, and leading the development of near real-time geospatial reporting. You will also act as the senior analytical point of contact for the ArcGIS platform, defining requirements, maintaining data layers, and collaborating with SitCen's OS embed to manage geospatial data appropriately. Additionally, you may serve voluntarily as G6 Duty Chief of Staff on the SitCen crisis response rota, overseeing delivery of analytical briefing products into COBR.
Additional Information
Cabinet Office policy requires a minimum of 60% of working time to be spent at the principal workplace, with flexibility depending on role and business needs. The role requires Developed Vetting security clearance, typically requiring 10 years UK residency. A reserve list may be held for 12 months for further appointments. Experience
- Expertise in Python and libraries including Pandas, Geopandas, and Plotly
- Proven experience with geospatial tooling and data such as ArcGIS, geo databases, and large spatial datasets
- Experience with unit testing frameworks like Pytest
- Knowledge of AWS serverless tooling including Lambda and S3, and ETL pipeline development
- Understanding of software principles and design patterns such as SOLID, Factory, and Builder patterns
- Familiarity with data management, governance, and compliance
- Understanding of modern data architectures, particularly AWS architecture
