About Us
Located in the heart of South London, Lambeth Borough is a vibrant community of over 317,600 residents. Stretching from the dynamic neighbourhood of Streatham in the South to the iconic landmarks of Waterloo in the North, we are proud to be the 9th largest borough in London. Our diversity is our strength, with more than 130 languages spoken, making Lambeth the home of the Windrush generation, London's largest LGBTQ+ community, and a thriving Portuguese-speaking community. Lambeth offers exceptional schools, lush green spaces including Brockwell Park, cultural gems like the Black Cultural Archives, and world-renowned institutions such as St Thomas's Hospital.
About the Team
Community Works is a dynamic, fast-paced service at the heart of Lambeth’s Housing operations. We deliver communal repairs, HIA minor works, FRA remedials, groundworks, drainage and estate-based maintenance across the borough. Our workforce includes multi-trade operatives, painters, groundworkers, HIA specialists, supervisors and area managers, all focused on providing a safe, reliable and responsive service for our residents. Health and Safety is central to everything we do. With teams working across estates, communal areas, voids and planned works, we rely on strong professional leadership to embed safe systems of work, strengthen our safety culture and ensure colleagues go home safe each day. You will join a supportive leadership group including the Head of Community Works, two Area Managers and operational Supervisors who manage day-to-day delivery. This is an ambitious service investing in higher standards, better training, improved compliance and more consistent risk management. Your expertise will directly shape how Community Works evolves and how we deliver safe, high-quality services for our residents.
About the Role
The Health & Safety Manager will be the lead professional for all safety matters within Community Works, guiding operational teams to work safely, confidently and in full compliance with Lambeth’s policies and statutory requirements. You will provide expert advice, practical support and constructive challenge across a diverse service delivering communal repairs, planned works, HIA minor works, FRA-related activity, groundworks and drainage. Responsibilities include developing and implementing safe systems of work, reviewing risk assessments and method statements (RAMS), undertaking site inspections, advising on incident investigations and supporting managers to embed a strong safety culture. You will oversee training needs, ensure operatives have the right competencies, and work with supervisors and area managers to resolve emerging risks proactively. The role works closely with Corporate Health & Safety, Compliance, Building Safety and senior managers within Community Works to align operational delivery with wider organisational expectations. You will be a visible presence across estates and depots, building rapport with staff, supporting learning and turning policy into practical, workable solutions. This role balances strategic responsibility with hands-on problem-solving and offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the safety and wellbeing of teams and residents.
Experience
Proven experience in a health and safety management role, preferably within a multi-trade or housing maintenance environment. Demonstrable ability to develop and implement safe systems of work, conduct site inspections, and lead incident investigations. Experience working collaboratively with operational teams and senior management to embed a strong safety culture.
About you
Strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to influence and engage a diverse workforce. Proactive and solution-focused approach to managing risks and improving safety standards. Confident in balancing strategic oversight with practical, hands-on problem solving. Committed to promoting wellbeing and ensuring colleagues return home safely each day.
Qualifications
Relevant health and safety qualifications (e.g. NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent) are essential. Eligibility to apply for an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and willingness to undertake a Cifas check as part of the recruitment process.
