About the Role
The Locum Consultant in Anaesthesia will provide training and service for the anaesthetic department, maintaining flexibility with fixed commitments. The role includes participating in a rota that ensures appropriate consultant leadership and on-call cover during nights, weekends, and periods of leave. The post holder will assist in the provision of services within the SWSH directorate, demonstrating flexibility and cooperation as required. Participation in the Directorate's clinical meetings is also expected.
Clinical Management & Teaching
The consultant will engage in the professional supervision and teaching of anaesthetic and other trainees within the department. Responsibilities include organizing and participating in teaching sessions for undergraduates, postgraduates, and other healthcare professionals, as well as mentoring and appraising trainees and assisting in the recruitment of trainee medical staff.
Research & Audit
Active involvement in audit and quality improvement projects is essential, supporting the Trust's Clinical Governance programme. The consultant will initiate and participate in agreed research projects within their field of expertise and implement findings from audits and research as appropriate.
Policy & Planning
Contributions to the development of clinical, treatment, and organizational protocols are required. The consultant will review and develop policies for clinical practice and effectiveness and assist in the development of the Directorate's Annual Service Plan.
Communication & Management
Supporting the Trust in providing the best possible care to patients is paramount. The consultant will participate in all aspects of the Directorate and Hospital's affairs, including attending relevant meetings and representing the department on appropriate committees. Monitoring performance indicators for the service and providing effective advice within the directorate is also part of the role.
The on-call commitment will be solely at the Homerton University Hospital NHS Trust, on a 1:16 basis. The timetable is provisional and will be subject to formal review after 3 months or sooner based on the changing needs of the post and local circumstances. Flexibility and cooperation are expected, especially in light of post-COVID-19 operating constraints.
Experience
Experience in anaesthesia and clinical supervision is essential.

Qualifications
Applicants must hold a relevant medical degree and be registered with the General Medical Council (GMC). Additional qualifications in anaesthesia are desirable.
