About the Role
Brent is a vibrant London borough known for its diversity and dynamic communities, spanning both inner and outer London. The Brent Labour Group is entering a new political term following the May 2026 local elections, with a clear policy direction to Believe in Brent and work towards making the borough cleaner, safer, and more affordable. This role supports the Labour Group of Councillors in delivering this programme within a plural Council environment, requiring collaboration, strong organisation, careful political judgement, and effective communication.
This varied and fast-moving role is at the heart of the Labour Group, supporting a wide range of councillors and working closely with the Head of the Leader’s Office, Labour Group Officers, and Members across the Group. Key responsibilities include acting as the first point of contact for the administration, leading on the work programme, providing executive support, interfacing between political leadership and the Council’s corporate management, researching and analysing relevant issues, and developing communication systems on behalf of the administration.
This position offers significant exposure to senior elected Members, Council decision-making, and the wider political, financial, and legislative context facing local government. It is an excellent opportunity for someone seeking to develop experience in politics, policy, communications, and local government. The post is politically restricted and fixed term until May 2030.
Experience
Experience in a political environment is valuable and desirable but not essential. Strong candidates may come from a range of backgrounds with a professional approach and a strong interest in public policy and local government.
About you
You will have excellent organisation, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the confidence to manage competing demands from multiple elected Members. You should be able to produce high-quality written material quickly and accurately, including briefing notes, speeches, press statements, social media posts, motions, questions, amendments, or lines to take. Comfort in translating complex policy, governance, and political issues into clear advice and practical support for councillors is essential.
An understanding of local government in London, the aims of the Brent Labour Group, and the political, financial, and legislative context is required. Digital and communications skills are important; experience with social media, video editing, graphic design, or other creative communications tools is advantageous, particularly to help translate complex policy and political messages into clear, engaging content for residents.
Qualifications
No specific qualifications are mandated; however, a professional approach, strong communication skills, and a keen interest in politics and local government are essential.
