About the Role
Historic England is seeking a Principal Inspector to join the Government Historic Estates Unit (GHEU). In this role, you will be responsible for providing expert advice and inspection services related to historic government estates. You will work closely with a range of stakeholders to ensure the conservation and appropriate management of historic properties, balancing heritage protection with practical estate needs. This is a key position that requires strong leadership, excellent communication skills, and a deep understanding of heritage conservation principles within a government context.
Experience
Proven experience in historic building inspection, conservation, or a related heritage field. Experience working within or alongside government or public sector estates is highly desirable. Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects and provide authoritative advice on historic properties.

You have the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and manage competing priorities effectively. A commitment to heritage conservation and sustainable estate management is essential.
Qualifications
A relevant degree or professional qualification in heritage conservation, architecture, surveying, or a related discipline is required. Membership of a relevant professional body is desirable.
