About the Role
At Burberry, creativity opens spaces and drives us to push boundaries and unlock new possibilities. As a Senior Data Architect, you will provide senior data architecture leadership across Burberry's change portfolio, shaping how data is structured, connected, governed and consumed across data products, platforms, analytics, reporting, AI and operational processes. You will lead complex data architecture assignments that span domains, systems and delivery teams, ensuring solutions align with Burberry's target data architecture. This role translates business and product outcomes into end-to-end data architectures, defining domain and cross-domain models, authoritative sources, system-of-record boundaries, data contracts, information flows and semantic structures.
You will collaborate closely with Data Products & Governance, Data Engineering & Platforms, Integration Architecture, Security, Solution Architecture and business stakeholders to resolve critical data design decisions and prevent fragmented or duplicated data solutions. This senior architecture role focuses on design authority, technical challenge and architectural assurance, coaching Data Architects and delivery teams, and escalating strategic decisions to architecture leadership and governance forums. The role does not involve platform operations, engineering delivery or people management.
Experience
- Significant experience as a Data Architect, Senior Data Architect, Data Solution Architect or similar senior data-focused architecture role within a complex enterprise environment.
- Strong expertise in conceptual, logical and physical data modelling with a proven track record of shaping cross-domain models and resolving complex data design challenges.
- Deep understanding of modern data architecture including lakehouse, data warehouse, data products, analytics, reporting and operational data, with knowledge of dimensional, 3NF, Data Vault and semantic patterns.
- Extensive experience designing end-to-end data architectures on modern cloud platforms; practical knowledge of Databricks or comparable enterprise lakehouse platforms is highly advantageous.
- Experience defining authoritative sources, system-of-record boundaries, data contracts, lineage and master/reference data approaches across multiple systems or domains.
- Strong understanding of metadata, data catalogue, data quality, privacy, security, retention and governance-by-design, with experience collaborating with governance functions and tooling such as Alation.
- Experience designing data architectures supporting analytics, semantic layers and reporting at enterprise scale; familiarity with Tableau, Looker or similar technologies is beneficial.
- Proven experience leading architecture for data migration, platform modernisation, consolidation, application replacement or legacy retirement.
- Ability to act as senior technical authority, challenge architects, engineers, system integrators and vendors constructively, and make pragmatic recommendations.
- Experience working across Product, Engineering, Enterprise Architecture, Integration, Security, Governance and business teams in product-led, Agile or squad-based environments.
- Experience coaching or mentoring architects or senior technical specialists to improve architecture quality and consistency.
- Strong communication and influencing skills, able to explain complex data architecture trade-offs clearly to senior technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience in Retail, Fashion, Luxury or Consumer Goods data domains (Product, Customer, Merchandise, Sales, Inventory, Supply Chain) is highly beneficial.
About you
You are a strategic thinker with a passion for data architecture and a commitment to delivering high-quality, scalable solutions. You thrive in collaborative environments and can influence across multiple teams and stakeholders. You are proactive in identifying risks and opportunities, and you mentor others to elevate architectural standards. You embrace Burberry’s values and are motivated to contribute to a sustainable, innovative future.
Qualifications
Relevant qualifications or certifications in data architecture, data management or related fields are advantageous but not mandatory. Demonstrated experience and expertise in senior data architecture roles are essential.
