About the Role
If you enjoy working in a challenging, fast-paced environment and have a passion to tackle some of the worst properties, we have a vacancy for a fully qualified Senior Environmental Health Officer/Practitioner (SEHO/SEHP). Newham is an exciting, vibrant inner-city borough committed to putting people at the heart of everything we do. It has one of the largest private rented sectors in England and a Private Sector Housing Service at the forefront of regulation through pioneering borough-wide property licensing schemes. These schemes protect tenants and landlords by creating a genuine deterrent for criminal landlords.
Over half of all families in Newham rent, many living in sub-standard dwellings and overcrowded Houses in Multiple Occupation. This presents a challenge where Senior EHOs play a vital role in improving the lives and quality of living for this vulnerable sector.
Our Private Sector Housing Standards team is looking for talented Senior Environmental Health Officers/Practitioners to work within private sector housing. The role includes carrying out multi-agency inspections of unlicensed properties, licence condition checks, and inspecting properties in disrepair.
You will be responsible for carrying out high-standard regulatory work within the Private Rented Sector, protecting tenants and making the sector fairer to operate in. Expect a mix of casework and project work, supporting tenants, and working proactively to address both common and highly complex problems.
From the outset, flexible working arrangements and training opportunities will be available. There will also be opportunities to develop your professional skills further with training and continuing professional development (CPD).
Newham is located only 5 miles (8 km) east of the City of London and north of the River Thames. Our office is well connected by public transport including London Underground, Overground, Docklands Light Railway (DLR), buses, National Rail, and the Elizabeth Line. It is also close to major road networks such as the M11 and M25.
We welcome applications from talented, hardworking individuals from London and across the country. Newham offers a relocation package of up to £7,000*, subject to eligibility, to assist newly appointed staff who need to move home because of their appointment.
