Our team handles a large volume of health information for clinical services across hospitals and community sites, contributing to public-facing content through our website, leaflets, films, podcasts, and apps. With ongoing digital transformation and adoption, you’ll have the opportunity to embed user-centred content design practices and optimise internal processes for greater agility and efficiency. Detailed job description and main responsibilities The senior health content officer uses their advanced content skills and knowledge to develop public information across a range of digital and print formats. They use evidence-based best practices to produce content that’s trustworthy, compassionate, easy to understand, accessible and inclusive, and that protects and uplifts the needs of underserved groups who are at increased risk of health inequalities. They also line manage 1 or more health content officers, supporting them to develop their skills and achieve our goals, and helping them to progress in, and enjoy, their role in the team. Beyond this, they also understand how to align projects with strategic objectives and are adept at planning and prioritising work accordingly. The senior officer works closely with other members of the health content team, wider communications department, staff across the Trust, including the directorate health content leads (clinical staff within each clinical specialty with an interest in health content), clinical and support staff, patient groups and the patient experience team. They oversee the monitoring of quality and availability of health content, ensuring it’s developed in line with our policy and approval process. They also raise awareness of the value of good health content, our processes and the range of information we have available. The team creates and facilitates the regular review of a large volume of health information for clinical services across our 5 hospitals and multiple community sites, and we also contribute to wider public-facing communications. The majority of our content is developed on our public website, but we also work on leaflets, films, podcasts and apps. Our team has undergone significant transformation in the last few years, owing to Trust-wide digital adoption, a new website, and team expansion to take on a broader remit of responsibilities. We expect the senior health content officer to take on increasing responsibility for supporting strategic objectives and optimising internal processes so we’re more agile and efficient in the way we work. This post is suitable for someone with a minimum of 18 months’ experience in content design, digital communications and content development, user experience (UX) design, or copywriting and editing, and experience or knowledge of user involvement. Key relationships Line management of health content officers Health content team (health content manager, 1 other senior health content officer, 3 health content officers) Head of digital communications and health content Director of communications The wider communications team, including communications and health content colleagues in clinical groups Directorate health content leads (Health Content Group) Drugs & Therapeutics Committee Clinical and support staff throughout the Trust Communications staff across King’s Health Partners Main duties and responsibilities Content development and best practices For each new information resource, use specialist knowledge and gather insights to determine the needs and journeys of users, developing user stories and agreeing measures of success. Lead on developing and employing our processes and best practices to ensure all Trust resources are accurate, evidence-based, relevant, and are developed in line with our policy. Use editing experience develop the format, structure and copy, creating or improving resources so that they meet best practices and legal standards for user-friendliness, accessibility and health literacy. Use advanced content management system (CMS) skills and knowledge to produce information that provides exceptional user experience and performs well in search engine results. Use the Microsoft suite and other design tools to design resources in well-formatted layouts and styles that meet brand guidelines and the unique needs of users. Commission and manage external supplier relationships including designers, printers, and filmmakers, to ensure that resources are well-presented, produced cost-effectively, and meet accessibility standards. Produce or commission health content in alternative formats where appropriate to meet the needs of our diverse local communities. Develop our content lifecycle management system and lead on the compliance of health content reviews across clinical groups so our information is accurate, up to date and fit for purpose Analyse and report on the effectiveness of health content using GA4, patient feedback and other digital tools. Use this information to advise colleagues on health content activity and performance in their directorate, and to develop ideas for improvement. Support the health content manager in planning and implementing internal and external projects and campaigns aimed at patients, that support our team and Trust strategic objectives. Advise on the production of other urgent content as needed, collaborating with the health content manager and the Head of Digital Communications and Health Content. This might include reactive messaging or social media posts. Promote the use of health content internally and work with staff to ensure it is distributed to patients in an appropriate and timely way. Advise Trust colleagues on the accessibility and usability of health content in its various formats. Champion plain English and ensure that all our health content is easy to understand. Provide presentations at training sessions/workshops to enable staff to reflect best practice when developing content for health content for their area both in print and online Provide excellent advice to staff at all levels on appropriate health content approaches, using evidence to explain user-led decisions. Work collaboratively on projects with other NHS trusts, national and local charities and patient groups, and other organisations, sharing health content and best practices. Project management and processes Manage a busy workload and ensure appropriate prioritisation of projects and activities to meet a range of deadlines on behalf of the health content team and other departments. Take responsibility for workstreams to improve parts of our processes. Use planning and organisational skills to manage projects from start to finish, working collaboratively and managing stakeholders’ capacity and emerging needs. Maintain internal systems to monitor the review and update process and distribution of resources. Work to improve the quality and consistency of health content across the Trust, by advising colleagues on the health content approval process, the Trust’s brand and style guides, and national requirements. Support local audits in directorates to provide assurance that good practice is being followed (including advising staff on minimum requirements for information displayed to patients and visitors). Contribute to the ongoing development of the health content system by suggesting and implementing process improvements. Act as a central point of contact for the health content team, handling day-to-day enquiries and complex requests from Trust colleagues about health content, and support officers with responses and stakeholder management communications. Working with stakeholders Attend and present in quarterly Health Content Group meetings and support the membership, which includes clinical and non-clinical staff. Support the health content manager by presenting agenda items at stakeholder group meetings and deputising for the chair if necessary, writing briefings, and coordinating meetings with the group and health content leads. Represent the health content team at internal and external meetings and events as required. This can require representing the communications team to advise on, and agree, campaigns for news stories, marketing, social media and wider Trust initiatives. Communicate content development best practices to internal and external stakeholders where cooperation is required to agree an approach, and support officers where the information or project is highly complex or sensitive. Work closely with the digital communications team and digital colleagues in clinical groups to ensure consistency across online information. Staff management and leadership Oversee and coordinate the work of health content officer/s including performance against team and personal objectives, and personal development. When new starters join the health content team, ensure that they are inducted into the team by demonstrating appropriate duties. Deputise for the health content manager, providing professional advice and guidance to senior staff. Education and professional development Maintain and enhance your own personal and professional skills and competencies and with the health content manager, contribute to your own appraisals and personal development plan and the health content officers. Keep up to date with professional, technological and best practice, methods and services that could enhance the role or team. Support a programme of knowledge and skills-sharing within the health content team and across the wider communications department.
