About the Role
Discover a career in your hands at HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). Whether you seek purpose, growth, or a workplace that offers a true sense of belonging, HMRC provides an inclusive and respectful environment reflecting the diversity of the society it serves. We offer flexible working patterns and support to make a fulfilling career accessible to all colleagues.

As a Senior Insolvency Consultant, you will be part of the Insolvency Governance and Professionalism (IGP) team within the Reviews and Corporate Services directorate of HMRC Legal Group. IGP is responsible for the insolvency profession across HMRC, providing expert advice, leadership, and governance to manage risk and build insolvency capability.

You will be one of 15 insolvency experts, working from a key regional centre, often non-co-located with your manager or colleagues. This functional leadership role involves governance, policy, and professionalism responsibilities. You will be one of three technical leads in a group of five G7s, leading a culture of innovation, customer service, and professionalism across HMRC’s insolvency profession.

Your key responsibilities will include providing technical advice on complex insolvency issues, jointly leading high-profile insolvency work such as provisional liquidations and restructuring plans, supporting engagement with external bodies like the Insolvency Service and Companies House, managing relationships with insolvency leads in HMRC directorates, and contributing to the development and reform of insolvency guidance and processes.

You will also contribute to internal learning development, quality assurance of training materials, drafting guidance, and policy reviews. This role offers a unique opportunity to influence the direction and capability of the UK’s most significant creditor in insolvency proceedings, helping reduce tax debt write-offs, tackle abusive insolvency practices, and improve the customer journey for insolvency practitioners.

HMRC supports flexible and hybrid working policies, allowing colleagues to balance work and personal commitments. Alternative working patterns may be considered subject to business needs.

Requirements

Experience
You must demonstrate expert knowledge of insolvency regimes, HMRC’s powers as a creditor, and how HMRC collaborates with insolvency practitioners to deliver its functions. Experience working within insolvency governance, policy, or professionalism roles is essential.

About you
You are resourceful, self-motivated, resilient, adaptable, and well-organized. You will thrive working as part of a small team within a larger directorate, often remotely from colleagues and managers. Strong communication, problem-solving, and teamworking skills are essential. You are motivated by developing others and supporting a team to deliver challenging objectives with high quality and professionalism.

Qualifications
You must have passed one or more of the following insolvency qualifications:
- HMRC Insolvency Profession Exam Programme (IPEP)
- IPA Certificate of Proficiency in Insolvency
- IPA Certificate of Proficiency in Personal Insolvency and Certificate of Proficiency in Corporate Insolvency
- ICAEW Certificate in Insolvency
- Joint Insolvency Exam
- An Insolvency Service equivalent qualification
