About the Role
Apple Cloud infrastructure is vast and complex. The Storage Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) teams build and operate next-generation distributed storage systems that support Apple’s most critical services. Operating at scale across multiple geographically dispersed data centres and servicing users with vast data needs presents unique challenges.

As a member of the Storage SRE team at Apple, you will leverage your deep understanding of infrastructure, storage, data analysis, programming, teamwork, and Linux system internals to solve these challenges. You will be responsible for understanding team priorities, taking ownership of projects and deliverables, designing solutions, building consensus, and ensuring successful and timely delivery.

Team members provide technical feedback to colleagues, drive technical standards across a distributed team, and collaborate closely with key stakeholders. The role includes participation in an on-call rota, including weekends, to handle alerts and escalations to maintain high availability and functionality of services.

The team is globally distributed, requiring collaboration across time zones through regular meetings. You will work with a mix of open source, vendor licensed, and internally developed tools for system configuration management, provisioning, software development and deployment, logging, and monitoring. Opportunities to learn and improve these tools are integral to the role.

Apple values critical thinking and balancing optimal solutions with practical delivery. Your work will impact hundreds of millions of users and be essential to the success of some of Apple’s most visible current and future features.

Requirements

Experience
- Building, operating, and scaling distributed storage systems in private, public, or hybrid cloud environments
- Designing, authoring, understanding, and releasing code in languages such as Go (preferred), Java, Python, or Rust
- Strong understanding of block, object, and file storage solutions in Linux (e.g., LVM, XFS, ext4, S3, Ceph, Gluster, NFS)
- In-depth knowledge of Linux internals, standard networking protocols, and distributed systems
- Experience with provisioning, data migration, backup and recovery, at-scale testing, disaster recovery, and capacity planning
- Awareness of best practices for deploying storage systems including physical and virtual deployment models, change management, failure domains, and hardware lifecycle management
- Hands-on experience automating manual operations and improving them through iteration
- Managing large numbers of diverse systems using configuration management or software delivery platforms such as Puppet, Chef, Ansible, or Spinnaker
- Deploying, supporting, and monitoring new and existing services, platforms, and application stacks
- Familiarity with microservices architecture and container orchestration using Kubernetes
- Familiarity with relational and non-relational databases such as Cassandra, Postgres, and RocksDB

About you
You are solution-oriented with a passion for software delivered as a service to improve reuse, efficiency, and simplicity. You thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced environment and are comfortable providing and receiving technical feedback. You have a strong drive to automate and improve operational processes and are motivated by delivering high-impact solutions that serve millions of users globally.

Qualifications
Relevant experience and demonstrated expertise in the required technical areas are essential. Formal qualifications are not specified but a strong background in software and systems engineering, particularly in distributed storage and cloud infrastructure, is expected.
