Job overview
An exciting key leadership opportunity has arisen within the finance team at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. The role reports to the Operational Finance Director and holds full responsibility for ensuring that the Trusts income is negotiated and contracted to the highest professional standards. The Trusts total income in 2023/24 was ~£2.9bn making it one of the largest Trusts in the NHS.
The post-holder will work particularly closely with colleagues from our host ICB in South East London; other ICBs and NHS England. In addition, you will work closely with the Associate Director of Finance for Income and Planning, senior leaders across the Trust, and colleagues from the finance and performance and information departments, and clinical and operational teams.
This is a high profile post integral to the success of the organisation. The post-holder is expected to work at a high level in the organisation demonstrating credibility with the Trust Directors, Senior Management Teams and Clinicians, and at a senior level with external bodies e.g., ICBs and NHS England.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
This is a senior finance position that is responsible for providing specialist advice across the whole of the organisation to the Operational Finance Director, Chief Finance Officer and other Executive and Board colleagues.
This role will lead on ensuring the total income (currently £2.9 billion per annum) of Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust from whatever source (clinical, research, educational, commercial or other) is negotiated and contracted for and then reported to the highest professional standards.
The post holder will take lead contracting responsibility for all clinical activity commissioned by NHS England (NHSE), Integrated Care Boards and Local Authorities. This will include taking the lead in contract negotiations and having lead responsibility for the monitoring and reporting of in year contract performance.
In collaboration with Clinical and Operational teams and Performance and Information, the post holder will be responsible for the further development of the contracting strategy and ensuring directorates both clinical and non-clinical plans reflect the contracts agreed.
The post holder will be expected to influence DoH / NHSE policy on contract developments and to keep abreast of and influence proposed funding changes such as population or capitation funding, personalised budgets or network funding proposals.

Skills / Knowledge/ Ability
Essential criteria
Highly developed negotiation skills
Able to persuade and influence effectively very senior managers both within the Trust and in partner organisations
Able to work across multiple organisations in senior partnership roles on behalf of the Trust
A good understanding of the strategic direction of the NHS Finance Function
Highly developed analytical skills – able to review complex processes and recommend appropriate changes to improve efficiency

A substantial and impressive track record of achievement at senior management level / leadership roles up to and including Director level in a large comparable, complex organisation
Developing and implementing strategies in a complex, multidisciplinary environment
Experience in working with operations and health informatics teams to develop and implement contracting strategies
Experience developing the systems, processes and procedures which are appropriate to ensure the smooth operation of planning, negotiating, contracting and monitoring of NHS Trust income from all sources
