About the Role
The London Borough of Haringey is the lead local authority for the North London coroner area, covering the boroughs of Barnet, Brent, Enfield, Haringey and Harrow. The council is legally responsible for providing the financial resources and staff to support the senior coroner in discharging statutory responsibilities for death investigations and the operation of the coroner’s court. Costs are shared on a per capita basis with the other four boroughs.

We are seeking a Coroner Service Manager to act as the senior professional lead for the council, providing inclusive and compassionate leadership while managing and developing the service in collaboration with the senior coroner. The role ensures a high-quality service to bereaved families.

As Service Manager, you will be accountable for performance and budget management within cash limits, working closely with council colleagues and external partners to ensure effective operating practices, policies, plans, contracts, and strategies that meet legal and governance requirements. You will monitor changes in the regulatory landscape and lead the council’s relationship with the other boroughs, focusing on budget forecasting, expenditure control, and value for money.

You will engage with a diverse range of stakeholders including bereaved families, police, the Ministry of Justice, the Chief Coroner’s office, GPs, funeral directors, mortuaries, lawyers, and other external bodies, using high-level communication and interpersonal skills.

Due to the high demand and unique nature of the service, you will often operate in challenging circumstances requiring a sensitive, discreet approach and well-reasoned judgement to make informed decisions. Previous experience in the coroner service is not essential; we welcome candidates with transferable skills from democratic services, legal/paralegal, law enforcement, or the bereavement sector.

- Exercising tact and courtesy in enquiries and distressing situations

About You
- Ability to work unsupervised and undertake a wide range of senior duties with initiative, judgement, and creativity
- Excellent leadership, communication (oral and written), and interpersonal skills
- Confidence, assertiveness, and resilience
