About the Role
If you’re interested in making a difference to people’s lives, HM Treasury offers an exciting opportunity to influence decision making that affects the whole of the UK. Working at the heart of government, you will collaborate across departments to promote responsible public spending and drive strong and sustainable economic growth. Our work spans protecting customers through financial sector regulation, reducing carbon emissions to create a greener economy, promoting British trade globally, and supporting people across the country on jobs and growth.
This role is part of the Darlington Economic Campus, a cross-government hub bringing people together to tackle key national issues while working closer to the communities we serve.
This varied and challenging Deputy Director position involves accountabilities covering macroeconomic and financial stability policy, operations, budgets, and financial and balance sheet management across government assets and liabilities. It is suited to candidates with experience in economics, finance, or financial markets, though expertise can also be developed in the role.
You will work alongside a co-Deputy Director to jointly lead a large team with complex and overlapping responsibilities, requiring strong leadership skills to ensure effective collaboration within the co-Director structure.
Key accountabilities include:

- Leading Treasury’s sponsorship of the DMO.
- Overseeing financial markets work, including monitoring developments in gilts and sterling rates markets, providing timely advice to senior officials and Ministers, and managing engagement with financial market participants.
- Overseeing management of the government’s foreign exchange reserves held in the Exchange Equalisation Account, working with the Bank of England.
- Representing Treasury’s interests as shareholder of the Bank of England, monitoring risk exposure and implications for the Bank’s capital.
- Leading governance of the indemnified Asset Purchase Facility and policy on indemnifying Bank of England crisis interventions.
- Jointly leading and developing a diverse, inclusive, and motivated team with the right capabilities.
- Promoting a positive culture within the Fiscal Group, supporting staff engagement, wellbeing, and diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
Experience
Proven track record of leading high-performing, inclusive teams in complex, fast-paced environments. Ability to establish strong collaborative relationships with senior leaders across organisations.
About you
Strong leadership skills with the ability to steer and lead technical analytical and policy challenges. Excellent communication skills to clearly convey technical analysis and policy options to senior decision makers. Commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion, and belonging. Ability to work collaboratively and deliver effective decisions under pressure.
Qualifications
