About the Role
East Ham Library is a busy flagship library within the London Borough of Newham. Recently refurbished, it features a large children’s library, community area, dedicated spaces for public PCs and study, and a wide selection of books. The library works closely with a number of partners and offers a wide and varied activity programme which is gradually being re-introduced as restrictions diminish. It is part of an ambitious and continually improving library service comprising 10 libraries, situated within the Resident Engagement and Participation service.

The Library Supervisor role is key to the service, responsible for line managing frontline library assistants and reporting to the neighbourhood Coordinator. You will ensure the smooth and professional running of the library, managing the team and resources efficiently and effectively. Leading by example, you will set and uphold expected standards, undertake training and continuous development for both your team and yourself, manage performance, and maintain a culture of continuous improvement.

You will be an experienced frontline team leader, preferably with a background in libraries, who understands the importance of excellent customer service and putting residents at the heart of everything. You will build, train, support, and motivate your team to deliver a high-quality library service. Taking pride in the presentation of library stock, you will work with the stock team to ensure it is representative, relevant, and engaging through exciting displays. You will have strong relationship-building skills and collaborate with a range of partners to deliver impactful events and activities aligned with the 7 DCMS outcomes for libraries. You will work well with peers and proactively support the wider service when required. Flexibility and creative problem-solving to resolve incidents are essential. Most importantly, you will believe in the power of libraries to change residents’ lives and be driven by the ambition to do so.

IMPORTANT: If you are a London Borough of Newham member of staff applying for this role as a secondment, please note that secondments are subject to the agreement of your current employing service. Ensure you inform your line manager of your intention to apply before proceeding.
