ERT Operative Level 1


Location
London, based in Denham, Uxbridge, working across the M25 DBFO Network.
Hours
Shift work on a 4-on, 4-off rotating pattern between 4 day shifts (05:00 to 17:00) and 4 night shifts (17:00 to 05:00), including 2x30 minute breaks per shift. Reasonable travel around the M25 network, depots, meetings, training, and work sites outside the normal operational area. Participation in out of hours call out rotas, including Winter Maintenance, is expected.

About the Role
Balfour Beatty currently has an opportunity for a Highways Emergency Response Team (ERT) Level 1 Operative to join the team managing and improving one of the busiest motorways in Europe - the M25. In this role, you will assist in the efficient service delivery of the M25 DBFO Network by undertaking a wide range of incident response, hazard clearance, network maintenance, and other tasks as required by your Line Manager.
Your duties will include but are not limited to cyclical maintenance, carriageway repairs, soft estate maintenance (e.g. grassland maintenance), litter picking, sign maintenance, cleansing, safety and boundary fence repairs, and minor civil engineering or building tasks such as headwall repair. You will implement Chapter 8 compliant Traffic Management in line with CPS policies, method statements, risk assessments, and industry standards.
You will provide accurate and legible written and verbal communication through reports and records, use mobile communication/data devices to input data, undertake routine vehicle checks, and maintain driving records in accordance with legislation and CPS procedures. Taking due care of CPS property including tablets, vehicles, and radios is essential.
Raising awareness of issues affecting the safe operation of the network and reporting them promptly is a key responsibility. You will ensure Traffic Management signs, equipment, and materials are carried on vehicles as per the current Maintenance checklist, restock supplies, and report defects as appropriate.
Participation in the Winter Service rota and attendance at training courses as required is expected. You will be expected to live the Balfour Beatty Values, maintain a relentless focus on Zero Harm, and support the delivery of CSUK’s Sustainability activities.

Experience
Experience in highways maintenance or emergency response is beneficial but not explicitly stated as essential. A commitment to safety and quality is required.
About you
Reliable, safety conscious, and able to work effectively within a team and under supervision. Willingness to work shift patterns including nights and participate in out of hours call outs. Able to travel around the M25 network and attend training and meetings as required.
Qualifications
Essential:
- UK Driving Licence, minimum category C (LGV Class 2)
- CSCS Operative Card
- Successfully pass security check as part of recruitment process
- Successfully pass annual driving license check
- Successfully pass pre-employment Drug & Alcohol test and further tests upon request
Desirable:
- UK Driving Licence, minimum category CE (LGV Class 1)
- Driver Qualification Card
- 12AB for Static Temporary Traffic Management on High Speed Roads and All Purpose Trunk Road (APTR) network
- Traffic Management Foreman (TMF) qualification / Lead Traffic Management Operative (LTMO)
- NHSS Sector 2 A/B Fencing qualification – Lead Installer Status (to be appointed by the CPS)
