About the Role
Balfour Beatty are seeking a Head of Health, Safety and Wellbeing to join our Highways team. This is a UK-wide, mobile role supporting a portfolio of UK Highways projects, offering flexibility on base location. As Head of HSW, you will champion our Zero Harm culture by working closely with senior leaders to embed best practice, influence positive behaviours and drive continuous improvement. You will support the development and implementation of HSW strategies and initiatives, ensuring compliance, enhancing wellbeing outcomes and helping create an environment where everyone can work safely and thrive. This role aligns closely with Balfour Beatty's commitment to fostering a strong Zero Harm culture and supporting the health, safety and wellbeing of all employees.

Key Responsibilities
Work with the HSW Director to develop and deliver the Business Unit/Project Zero Harm Strategy. Deputise for the HSW Director as required. Manage recruitment and development of HSW professionals within your chain of command, including coaching and mentoring. Develop professional relationships with regulators, customers, JV partners and the supply chain. Undertake health and safety compliance evaluations, tours and audits to ensure sufficient assurance of project activities. Collaborate with Executive General Managers, Managing Directors and Directors to carry out project and business sector HSW performance reviews and reporting using lagging and leading indicators. Review and investigate accidents, incidents and near misses in accordance with Balfour Beatty standards to identify and share lessons learned, ensuring actions progress through the serious incident review process. Work with the wider BB HSW team to promote Zero Harm and continuous performance improvement.

Requirements

Experience
Corporate Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (or working towards). NEBOSH Diploma or NCRQ qualification. Detailed technical knowledge and experience of health and safety legislation, regulations and guidance. Construction industry experience (or equivalent sector), with specific knowledge of CDM regulations. Proven leadership experience providing support to operational and functional teams at a senior level.

Strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to influence senior stakeholders. Committed to promoting a Zero Harm culture and continuous improvement. Able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Collaborative and proactive in building professional relationships across diverse teams and external partners.

Qualifications
Corporate membership of IOSH (or working towards). NEBOSH Diploma or NCRQ qualification essential.
